Topic: Breeding emeralds? Posted: January 05 2009 at 7:17pm |
I have only bought 2 emerald crabs. both have gotten quite large. and now there is a small one walking around. huh??? has anyone heard of the crabs breeding? if so How do I know if they are breeding? It has been 6 months since I added new rock. just frags that have been diped and treated so if it survived that and I missed a crab...... doubtful.
Any Ideas?

Almost certainly came in on the live rock as a small crab. Only remotely possible that the crab was tank raised. In fact, it would be a first to my knowledge.

As in Peppermint and Cleaner Shrimp, their larvae would become fish food. That little crab may not be an Emerald. Look at it's pincers. The ends where they make contact should be flat discs. Anything else and it would most likely be as Adam said, what is called a rock crab. Watch it closely to be sure it isn't eating something that you want to keep. If it becomes a pest, it is easy to trap in a glass jar baited with a piece of shrimp, and tipped at a 60 degree angle against the LR.

I agree with Adam and Mark. Probably a hitchhiker, and probably not an emerald.

I know it is an emerald. it has the furry legs rounded pincers and a rough top body.

Mythrax/Emerald Crabs do not have fuzzy legs. The pincers must be flat where they make contact. I would watch it very closely.

Emeralds do have "hairy/fuzzy" legs, but as Mark said the pinchers are a sure giveaway. Are they flat where they make contact?

Okay, so maybe Emerald Crabs have hairy legs, but mine aren't European, they are American 'cause they shave their legs smooth as a baby's bottom.
