Topic: Anenome Posted: January 17 2009 at 6:24pm |
My anenome is a buthead. Got a cute little baby clown from Crystal, who immediately hosted, and it freaked out a little. Ended up moving, which was ok. Then I had to adjust my flow and it went behind the rocks for two weeks. Finally I got pissed and pulled it off the glass and put it back to where it was pre-clown. It was still being hosted. However the little clown did not follow it. So I keep peeking behind the rock the best I can to check on the clown. Well I see another nem back there, with the clown in it. So now I have a nem behind the rocks, a pretty small one. Will the stupid thing come out or what? The original one split off Mark's maybe two or three months ago and I didn't expect it to split so soon. It gets like zero light where it is. I actually moved the rock it is on and didn't see it. Weird. I looked at that rock on the back cause it has cool bright yellow sponge growing on it in a matt form. Anyway, will that little nem come out to play or what?

But I can't see it where it is! I am unhappy so it should move. Maybe I will turn the rock around, let the cool sponge and the pulsing xenia all die so I can see it.

Patience, I bet it comes out eventually. But if it does not after a couple weeks change something. You'll have plenty of time to enjoy it but changing stuff all the time is hard on critters not designed to be in a constant state of change.

I've heard that pointing a powerhead at them can get them to move but I have not tried it. There is always the chance that it will move and sting everything in its path too.

Mike, it seems you know a lot about anenomes. In a small tank can you have an anenome or will it just 'take out' the other corals by stinging? We have a 12 gal with lots of rock/coral and two clowns. We would love to have the mated pair move in to an anenome but am worried about the corals. And if the clowns are older and tank raised, will they even end up going to an anenome?
Thanks Mike!
And sorry for taking the thread.

Most anemones can and will move, need intense light, pristine water, and can kill corals. Many people keep then successfully in small tanks but I wouldn't do it myself other than Rock/Flower anemones which clowns don't host in. I have also seen anemone's move over the return water gate on small tanks, blocking them off, and causing a flood. Many tank raised clowns will host but it can take them months to figure this out. I've had them host in most anything. GSP, Toadstools, Devil's hands, Hammer, Frogspawn, Xenia and probably others that I can't think of.

Interesting! Thanks for the response. I know ours have been hanging around the frog spawn. I'll leave things well enough alone then.

They can be super annoying. I had the same problem. I just added a green bulb a couple weeks ago. It start out fine in front of the tank then a day or two it was GONE. I couldnt even find it. Few days later I seen a tip of its tentacle. Couple days after that I moved some rocks to get to him and he was not in the same spot and I couldnt find him again. Then he appeard, I gently pulled him off the rock and put him where I wanted but only two days later and he was in the back of the tank again. He was then attached to a rock so I didnt want to move him. I turned the rock around and he has been happy ever sense.
But I think the right thing to do is let them figure it out. I tried to keep moving it but he kept going where he wanted. Turning the rock not moving him has worked out great though.

Yeah mine is still in the same spot. I am going to try turning the rock around next time I am in the tank.
