Hey Guys!
I am brand new and buying my first large tank this weekend. A 75 gallon reef tank and was wondering if I could get some hints/help with it! I love salt water fish and would love to get my tank somewhat close to some of the tanks I have seen on this site with coral everywhere!
PM me or reply to the thread! I love to see the coral grow as well!
THanks everyone! I will update this after I get the tank and post some pics!

So, are you pickuing up a used tank with stuff already growing or are you firing this up from scratch?

Well needless to say you have allot to learn. I would suggest picking up a couple of books that really helped me when I first got into the hobby-

The Consciences Marine Aquarist by Robert Fenner
Aquarium Corals By Jayson Borneman

Also there are many great threads and experienced people here willing to help you out in your new venture.

Welcome to the hobby.

Rules of Saltwater:
1) Go see other tanks of members and ask questions.
2) Go see some more tanks and ask more questions.
3) PATIENCE!
4) Even more patience.

Did my point get across? LOL

Have you decided on lighting for the tank? Flow in the tank? Sump? Livestock?

What kind of tank? Mixed reef? Softies only? SPS dominate?

Those are all questions you should answer before moving on. I am not trying to slow you down or sound mean but you can save a major headahce and some major money if you do it right the first time. You can PM me or call anytime if you have questions. Also my tank always wants to be looked at.

Shameless plug: Check out the "build" threads for ideas.  There are a lot of ways to do a successful SW tank and if you get a look at a lot of ideas, you will be able to pick out the ones that will work for your situation.

Your mileage may vary, but it is highly unlikely you will experience something that others on this board haven't been through already.  You'll be able to learn from other's mistakes and also hopefully have some insight when things might be going wrong a lot sooner than a normal Noob would.  (I know I'm banking on that for me! Tongue )

The #1 thing now is to get some notion as to what you want to keep, as mentioned earlier.  Personally speaking, I changed my mind a dozen times, even right up to the day I mixed my first batch of SW.  Suggestions will vary greatly depending on what you want to keep and then on your budget.  Parts of the hobby are expensive and unavoidable (like good lights for reef tanks) and other parts are expensive and may be optional in your situation.  Even the spendy stuff has more affordable options.

You are in the right place.

Welcome. =)

I agree with the suggestion of reading. Read forums, read articles, read books.
The Nano-Reef Handbook by CR Brightwell is also a very good starter book. It might be geared towards small tanks but the basics are the basics of any tank and the book does a pretty good job at explaining them.
The New Marine Aquarium by Michael S. Paletta is a book I've had people recommend to me as a great, affordable starter book but I haven't picked it up yet.  Confused
As mentioned Aquarium Corals by Jayson Borneman is an awesome book.

Hey guys! Thanks for the tips!
I am buying an allready established Salt Water tank, but it doesn't have much as far as coral, it has tons of live rock with coraline algae all over them, and it has one patch of polyps, 4 anemone's (all branched from the original and near the same spot) and some grass, most of the rock isn't covered though and I will post pics as soon as I can! I love the ideas and I will definetely pick up some books. The guy I'm buying from is going to help me the first little bit so that I can keep the tank alive but in the meantime I am trying to learn as much as I can so that my tanks can look like some of the ones I saw on here!
Thanks for all the help!

I would second the suggestion about going over to others tanks and picking there brains. That seems to be very very useful when starting out and I wish I would of done that myself.

Get some pics up as soon as you can!
