Topic: I lost a fish tonite Posted: August 06 2012 at 8:54pm |
I bought a little yellow tail damsel for my new nano frag tank Saturday evening and he didn't act right from the moment I put him in the tank. I did acclimate him for about 30 minutes. He hid in the lower corner of the tank, but I thought he was just scared. Sunday and today I watched him slowly die and didn't know if I should take him out of his misery or what. Death is difficult for me as I lost the one person in the world who meant the most to me not that long ago. Now this ... I've been so frightened of losing something else that I pray every nite for my animals. I guess I should pray for my fish.
What do you do when you know a fish isn't going to make it. Do you wait until it dies or is there a way to take it out of its misery. This is my first fish death. I feel so terrible about this. I can't believe I'm crying over a tiny fish that I've only had in my home for 2 days.

Is your tank cycle How did you acclimate him I heard that the less painful way that you can make a fish die us by putting him in the freezer

Wait until you lose something expensive like a 60 dollar flame angel or a 30 dollar coral beauty or 2 heniochus banner fish. Next to those a mean little cheap damsel is nothing. It always sucks losing a fish but even more do expensive ones!

Yes, my tank was cycled .. although there wasn't much if a cycle! No sand. Live rock from my Biocube. Good water from my LFS. The tank was spotlessly clean before I put water in it. But after the death of that little fish I did a 50% water change, changed out carbon and floss and have been testing daily. My test parameters are perfect. I've been a little afraid to put anything new in the tank! Today I went ahead and took the risk of putting one small frag from my Biocube in the tank. Of course it closed up tight as could be while I was moving it. But its fully open now so I'll wait several more days and see what happens before I put any more frags in it. I'm missing out on all the good frags for sale on these boards!

I felt like crying when I lost my Flame Wrasse Pair.. 300.00 and two beautiful fish gone.. Fish you will become attached to as weird as that sounds. And I do not think she was sad about the money she had lost, but more the fact that she had a recent death in her life and now something else had died.
