WHAT IS THE BEST LIGHTING TO USE TO GROW MACRO IN A REFUGIUM? ARE PC'S OK OR IS IT BETTER TO USE A LHS SPECIAL?  I'VE BEEN USING A SMALL CORALIFE PC UNIT.  I DON'T KNOW IF MAYBE THERE IS SOMETHING BETTER.  THANKS TRAVIS

Id say ideal is probably a 5500-6500K metal halide bulb. But you probably would be nearly as good (maybe better in certain setups) with 6500K power compacts.

The best growth I have ever got was with a 4200K MH bulb. Far better growth than even natural sunlight. And ive tried a lot of different lights (Glow lights NO, 65watt 6500k PCs, 10,000k MH, 4000K MH, 4200K MH, natural sunlight.

High Pressure Sodium might work very well too but ive never tried it. Maybe one in the 3500-4500K range.

You can also get Mercury Vapor ballast with a 6500K Iwasaki bulb for cheap.

The HID lighting is best IMO, but you would probably be fine just going with some cheap PCs. $20 and you get good growth.

THANKS FOR THE INPUT, I'LL LOOK INTO GETTING SOMETHING IN THE 6500K RANGE A LITTLE DOWN THE ROAD BUT IF MY PC'S WILL WORK ALRIGHT FOR NOW, I'LL SAVE MY PENNIES AND UPGRADE SOON.

I use the 19W compact flourescent light of america flood light  that cost 10 bucks each together with a clip-on fixture that costs 5 bucks each.  I have two of them in my 80g refugium and macro grows like mad.  They are energy-efficient, create much less heat, and cheapo too.

the 19 W CF dkle is talking about is a screw in type I think. You want to make sure its the 6000K bulb, or so ive heard. Here read this thread (the WHOLE thing, no skimming )....
