Has anyone had any experience with using natural sunlight on their tanks? I know about the problems with excess heat, but if I can cope with it, is there any other reason for not doing it?

Tons of algae growth, good or bad depending on what you like.  Plus your tank will lose a lot of its "beauty" because it washes out the blues from your actinics and things like that.  I think it is a great way to go, if you can appreciate the look of it.

This topic could really get me going, and since I say too much anyway, I will just say that I've had four separate tanks with more than five years in south and east facing windows. They were fantastic. If you want to discuss more, just ask me or call me. Maybe tell us what you have in mind.
Algae can be controlled in just the same ways as we speak of often here on the forum.
Sure the color is different, but it's better more brilliant and when the sun goes down the actinics make it glow in a different color!

Well so much for not saying much!
A pic is worth a thousand words! This pic is of a tank in direct sunlight.
