Topic: Candy Cane coral........ Posted: March 10 2004 at 11:41pm |

I have a pretty sizable Candy Cane coral. It would be kinda nice to frag this thing, unfortunately I havent found much in the way on fragging techniques. Tried a search and came up with nothing? Is this possible? If so has anyone tried it or know of any links on the net that cover this issue? I would greatly appreciate any info that could assist me on this.

Very simple. I assume the heads have been growing and splitting in your tank. Break the stalk( dikes/wire cutters works best) and epoxy it to a rock. It will continue to grow and split.

Check out this article. Candy Canes can be fragged basically the same way that Euphyllias can.

Just wanna say, I'm new here and I do have experience with fragging the candy's... In fact, I just completed a frag of a large colony of candy's. It's really very simple, at the base(preferrably, at least 1" length from actual crown to split)cut/break and either glue to new rock frag or just glue to preferred place in reef(rock/crevice). Goes pretty much along with the other answers so... good fraggin'.

Thanks for the helpful input Jason.
I have fragged a number of Acros and Softies, just no LPS's. I figured it would be pretty straight forward to do but just started the thread to see if there was any tips or "special" considerations. I am glad that everyone has came forward with helpful info.
I work with explosives, so I am quick to decide and slow/cautious to proceed on new things without thinking it through long and hard. Fraggin a coral wont blow me up but I would rather not kill it either in the process. Old habits are hard to break sometimes...

Explosives??? Me, too... only not raw. I'm actually a production associate at Autoliv in Brigham City( I operate mig welders that are used in the production of the inflators for auto safety airbags.).

Just a weapons Tech for the military building bombs missiles and handling demo material, etc... No biggie - just a thing I do. Hopefully I dont get contracted out to Iraq! At least until its a bit safer anyways... So far they have only lost a couple a co-workers courtesy of a IED ment for US military troops.

Damn... can you believe that explosives can be used in all kinds of scenarios...ranging from displays of celebration, killing, and even protecting our everyday lives??? The things I think about at 1am with little sleep...boggles the mind.

And I thought I was the only one that had issues Jason, He He He... Between fish/aquariums, guns and what not at least I am never bored!
yeah Mark that was a pretty decent article! With instructions that idiot proof, even I cant screw it up. I was just mainly interested in exactly where to prune these guys without damaging the polyp. As per the article I should be able to make two coral heads into 5 nice sized frags. Gotta love it when paln comes together...

Not at the moment. I wanna hang onto them a while. I will probably frag them this comming week end though. I have two dencent colonies. One is your typical bright neon green polyp edged in brown. The other is kind of a turquoise inner and outter ring polyp that looks kinda nice. I didnt realize there was really that much variation in Candy Cane corals.
Maybe we can work something out later if your still interested.
