So if it is mid-water, then would it be happier closer to the lights?  Or is that a silly and/or impossible idea?

Mine's about 6" away from a 175 10K He's growing like mad just alot of brown to him.

Patience, Jeff-san, is the key to all good things.  I have no personal experience - just something I saw on a fortune cookie.  Patience with corals is key.  Sometimes they surprise you.  I've had a few that surprised me, with the right light, food, and temp.
