As I cannot find the coral propagation section anymore I will put this here.

I am just looking for where I can read up on fraging a green Finger Leather or a Yellow Toadstool.

Sorry I didn't make it to the frag meeting so anything there I did not see.

I am just wondering -- Where to cut, how big the coral should be, how big the frag should be (at least), How to attach them to another rock (details on what the bridal veil method is)

Thanks

You know we just got rid of the coral propagation section yesterday, and you noticed it was gone yesterday.  I would have thought it would have gone weeks before anyone would have noticed.  All the posts in that forum have been moved to the coral forum.

To your question- I just cut the finger right off of them.  I like frags that are the size of my pinky, but most people make really small frags, like the size of the tip of your pinky.

Don't worry about the bridal veil, that is what Jake uses, and you don't want to be like Jake.  Just use a rubberband to hold it onto a rock.  And I do think it helps to use part of the rock with a hole in it, so you can push the cutting down in there.
I also like to cut most soft corals where a V or Y is, so that you can put the rubberband in that area between the two branches.

For the toadstool, I would do this.  Cut it like a pizza with slices around the edges... but DON'T cut all the way to the middle.  Let the pieces stay attached in the middle for two weeks.  Then go back, and cut that little middle piece and remove your "pizza slice" of toadstool.  The rubberband it to a rock.

Does that make sense?

I agree with Adam. And Jakes way works great too.

Sarcophyton/Toadstool or Mushroom Leather,
Sinularia/Finger Leather,
Lobophyton/Cabbage Coral
Green Nepthea

We have sometimes chopped the mother colony up into a hundred pieces and attached them all in one act, and they do fine. But the more you cut them the more they pollute the tank with their toxins, so it's best to do like Adam said, giving the tank time to decompose the toxins before cutting again.

Oh... the bridal veil method is to cut a piece of bridal veil to cover the cutting on the rock, then use elastics to hold the bv in place then when it's attached use sharp scissors to cut off the bv, some of the coral will have grown into the bv, but just leave what you can't cut because the leather will grow over it. The advantage to bv is that cuttings can't slip out from underneath it and get lost behind the rocks, like they can with a single elastic. (Use two elastics crossed over the top of the cutting.)

Another tip is to place the cutting on the size of rock that will hold it's weight when full grown or
be prepared to allow it to grow onto another larger rock. I've placed recently attached cuttings on too small rocks upside down so they are always touching a larger surface and they turn and grow up attaching to the larger surface at the same time.

Hope this helps.

FYI,

The Bridal Veil method that Mark described is not how I do it.  I will post my method sometime next week when I have time.

WARNING-

Although you think it is a good idea, it isn't.  Take my word for it.... do NOT use your wife's wedding veil for your coral cuttings.  It takes months, seriously months for them to forgive you.

As embarrassing as it may be, just go to the fabric store.  Trust me!

Jake, will the propagation forum be back? Since we as a club place such a high importance on propagation, I vote for it's return.

Also I feel dumb even mentioning this since I use very slang terminology, for instance blastos and such but when discussing propagation we include mushrooms and other animals that may not necessarily fall under the coral category.

Keep your hands and arms inside the tank and enjoy the ride!
