Topic: Hanging MH/VHO light rack Posted: July 26 2004 at 5:05pm |

I'm going to make a frame and take a sheet of mirrored aluminum bent for a reflector and install 2-4'VHO & 2-175W MH. It will hang from the ceiling.
Suggestions?

Ya, go with 250W MH
I really like your idea. What are going to make the frame out of?

Are you going to wire in fans to the rack? How are you planning on bending the aluminum?

Mark you really should swing by my place. I have a friend who made a metal MH hanger for me. I have one over my reef that holds two and one over my sea horse tank that holds one MH. That come straight out from the wall. He could make some for you as well. I think they look better then having them hanging from the celing.. I have vaults so that was not an option for me... I will try to post a pic....

Mark:
I'm in the processos making a base/cabinet for a new tank. I've got the garage filthy and tools out, so if your interested in a DIY rack for your lights, get some ideas and drop by to chat. We should be able to knock something out pretty quick.

JFinch, why 250W? 1x2 Fir strips connected as a frame, which will make it lightweight yet strong.
Vangvace, Fans may not be necessary. The idea is that it's open to the room and doesn't sit right on the tank to capture heat. I buy it local ($2/square foot) as sheets and it bends easy and cuts with Tinsnips. It's the same stuff that aquarium lighting reflectors are made of. See the pic.
Connie, I remember your hangers, but the tall window is right there. I might be able to place them higher on the wall. Thanks for suggesting it.
Ollie, I want to come get the Caudiella anyway so I'll call soon. Thanks

Does the M58 ballast run 175's too?
The reason I figured on 175's was that it's just supplemental light. This tank gets direct sunlight all morning, so it will need a few more hours of "almost" sunlight to keep the SPS and clams going.
Wha d'ya think?

JFinch, why 250W
Because I figured I couldn't talk you into 400Ws .
Here's my reasoning. From a DIY standpoint there really isn't any cost difference between 250 and 175. And with Rich selling M58 ballasts for $40, the 250 is probably cheaper. I've got a feeling that 250w might be more light then you'll like (there are some mushrooms and "red" corals that need serious shade in my tank), but with your style of canopy all you need to do is raise it up a bit to reduce the light. Also, many (maybe most) other softies actually look and grow better, at least to my eyes, under intense MH lighting. For example, green nepthia is much greener and compact under MHs. With 175w there is no way to get more light without dropping the hood into the water.

No. M58 is a 250 Watt Probe start ballast.

I not really sure, if I remember I'll ask one of the electricians out here tomorrow. But I would guess that it would get real bright for a short time and then burn out. Ballasts are current limiting devices, so it would provide the 175 watt bulb with 250 watts of power.

When I lived in Italy I plugged a 120v 100w light bulb into a 220v socket. (The house was wired for 120v and 220v and I guess I mixed the lights up). It was one of the brightest light bulbs I've ever seen, it only lasted for 45 minuets though.
MHs and ballasts are different then regulate light bulbs, as I was doubling the voltage and thus increased the current as well, but my guess is a 175w MH on a 250w MH ballast would have a similar effect.
