Ryan,
I hope the carbon fixes the problem. I wish I had the book with me so I could quote from it. But, there were only a couple types of corals that release this chemical. A tank devoid of these corals (mainly Colts, and star polyps) would not suffer from the problem.
I have never been to GARF, so I am not sure if they grow those two corals or any that excrete the chemical. Once again there are 100 ways to skin a cat and even more ways to succesfully run a reef.
As for the test, I have run my skimmer less than I have not run it, but I see a slight decrese in water quality (the water parameters still zeros but more algae growth on glass and sand) when it is not running. However, no skimmer for me eaquals no carbon. So it is not a valid test of carbon versus skimmer, just skimming and carbon versus not skimming and no carbon.

Thanks everyone. It's making more sense to me now and also explains why carbon has always been a staple of the aquarium hobby.
I guess now, no one will want to try the experiment.

Also,
Kevin seems to highly value the judgement of these 20 and 30 year "reefers". If I remember correctly, he also mentioned them in a previous post, but may not have named them. Would he PLEASE give their names and how to hear from these people? Have they written articles somewhere? I, and probably others here, would also like to benefit from whatever they can tell us about reefkeeping. How about inviting them to be guest speakers? I imagine they've done and seen a lot, having been at it that long. (If anyone reads this as a flame or an argument they are mistaken, because I am totally serious about learning from everyone.)
Thanks,

Mark, I know them the same way I met you. Online at another forum. I have been corasponding with them online through a forum for almost 2 years. The name of the forum is www Go click on "the new public forum" They post under the names of Tangster (30+ years) and Old Salt Guy (20+). If you read through their posts you will find they are very respected but also very friendly. I doubt if you could get them as a guest speaker.

Thats Funny. I have been reading Tangsters Posts on the about.com saltwater site for about 4 years now. He really knows his stuff. I based my current system entirely from info from him. I beleive he lives in Michigan.

Thanks Kevin.
I checked a thread and they were both there. Shouldn't we at least ask them? Maybe they have been waiting to be asked. Nothing definite, but just to find out about them and see if it's a possibility. It's Adam's call as to whether we actually schedule Guest Speakers, but I always enjoy them, even the crazy ones! Someone else just as into the hobby or more so than I am, is fun to meet and listen to.

Well you could ask but Roger (Tangster) is laid up right now. He was in a very serious car crash several months ago and is still going in for repeat surgery on his legs.

Anyone can try a sprig of the red grape algae if they simply call me anytime to arrange a visit.
I also have some frags that are overgrowing my 10 gal tank. If no one wants them, I will give them to my brother. Here's a list, but they aren't for sale, they're free, especially to new hobbyists:
Encrusting Gorgonia
Green Star Polyps
Acropora
Green Nepthia
Plate coral
Mushroom Leather
Photosynthetic Sponge (a must for every tank)
Woods Polyps
Yellow polyps
You can see most of them, when they were smaller, in the Tank of the Month pics

I'd love the green nepthia and acropora. Perhaps I can bring something from my own tank to trade? I have Cabbage Leather, Colt Coral, and some small Recordia Mushrooms I could swap ya...
PM me Mark and let me know if they're still available.
By the way Sean, when can I come and see your tank? Now that 2100 South is open, it's much more practical for me to come and check it out.
Call or PM me and let me know.
By the way, Thanks again Rich for mentioning the research about the Carbon. I think that is the culprit to all of my Button Polyps, and Yellow Polyps being closed up for so long.
Thanks,
Ryan
