I was looking again at the amazing cracks. Did it crack all at once and make a terrible sound? You said "boom"? And did the pieces fall into the tank? That must have been scary, and if it were me, I would have stood there wondering if the side would pop and water would come gushing out, like in those movies. |
Oh yea it made a terrible sound almost like someone shot a 22 in my front yard. The broken glass did fall into the tank and I still don’t think I got it all out (I keep thinking my Mandarin Goby is going to be looking for food and slice him self on a piece hidden in there somewhere). Needless to say I stood there scared to move for a second. Scenes from Duce Bigolo popped into my head and I was trying to think of what tupper ware/buckets were going to be fastest to grab. Boy was I relieved when nothing else cracked!! I noticed today when I was going to put on the new piece that I got 3/8 and the old glass is not as thick. That reminds me I think jfinch said what caulk will be safe in our tanks anyone know what kind it was? I will be cutting the old sealant out and adding the new glass in the morning.

I've had good luck using GE Door and Window 100% Silicone I. I noticed Home Depot now carries Aquarium Sealant in a small squeeze tube (kind of expensive). For this small job it might be a better option.

I had Silicone II peel right off of an overflow I made twice. I think it was because I was bonding acrylic to glass, not glass to glass, but who knows for sure... From now on, I only use the Aquarium Silicone that Jon mentioned.

If you use silicone or sealant or anything else, make sure that you keep the area really well ventilated until it cures. I've heard stories about the fumes killing the livestock on stocked tanks like that.
Good luck!

For the amount of silicon that he needs in that area, it would be good to ventilate with a fan as Meeshi_ma said, but the livestock will be okay and water can even come in contact with it after 24 hours and cause no problems. I like the vinegary smell I'm half German, half Danish and like saurkraut(sp?) and red cabbage

Jburse, I didn't mean that to come across wrong. Sorry... It just made me laugh to think that a 22 Cal rifle is loud. Maybe "terrible sound" was not referring to the volume of the shot. Oh well, sorry to get off track.

Marcus no reason to be sorry!! I know better then to take anything any one says in a message board personally. (Especially you and Mark ) And it probably seemed allot louder to me, having my head within inches of the thing in a glass box when it went BOOM. But it was loud enough to wake the house up from a dead sleep.
