I recently found out my magnesium was around 1160. I have always had Mag around 1300-1400 until I recently testing. I was convinced to only test Mag every few months but now I'm starting to think differently. I knew something was off when my Ca was testing around 330 and my corals looked stressed.

What are you dosing that's cost affective? Can I just dose Epsom Salt since it is basically the same thing as SeaChems advanced mag?

I dose bulk magnesium sulfate (epsom salts) and magnesium chloride. I dose both in order to balance out the anions.

I test mag once every three months along with the rest of my chemistry. I also dose Epsom salt weekly as needed. Most of the time my chemistry is right on and mag doesn't need much of a boost.

Is it harmful to only dose Epsom salt? Where do you get the Mag Cloride?

Plenty of people do it, but it can lead to a buildup of sulfate ions. You can mitigate it somewhat with water changes or magnesium chloride. I buy mag chloride in bulk from Bulk Reef Supply. Mag Flake (deicer) is magnesium chloride, but I don't buy it due to the impurities (but plenty of people do).

I'd also look at what salt your using, perhaps test a fresh batch of saltwater....if you're doing regular water changes, Mag shouldn't drop a whole lot...my guess is that your salt probably has a mag around 1200....

To raise mag requires a TON of dosing.....during this process your salinity will also dramatically rise, so keep an eye on it....I'd suggest you get a salt with a little higher mag and do a few water changes and things should improve in a few weeks.

Unfortunately I think it is the salt I have been using that has low Mag despite their claim of it being high. I will never buy this salt again. Thanks for the advice about the salinity rising, I didn't think of that.

Would I use the same amount of Epsom salt as I would the SeaChem Mag supplement?

Noooo...

Here's the link on how to make it:

And here's the calculator on how much to add:
