QuoteReplyTopic: Can I remove center brace? Posted: November 16 2011 at 7:38pm
I have a 72g bow and i was wondering if it is safe to remove the center top brace. Or this for structural support when the tank is full ? It's all glass glass with the wrap around plastic. Or is only to support the glass lids which i don't intend to use I've filled the tank checking for leaks and cleaning and the brace has never moved . ( has a lil sag in it from light heat i assume)
thanks after i googled it my question answered as it is a structural brace that shouldnt be removed unless u like cleaning up water live stock etc....... was just a thought
I removed mine on my 36g bow front so i could get my filter to fit
The tank is currently down, but i wanted to start it back up. I'm pretty sure the 72g is the same thickness of glass. will this still be questionable for my size tank? If so any ideas how i can fix it? i didn't keep the plastic brace piece either ughhh..

best advice google it..."is it ok to remove center brace on 36g bow front aquarium " I found a ton of info and most was bad news . u can always buy a new top piece. i wanted to change mine to black but it was so difficult to remove i opted to take another route. TCFAB is awsome at stuff he might have a solution for u but with my limited knowledge it may be foolish to follow my advice . best of luck to you :)
just a thought u could always measure front to back empty and use a pipe clamp to hold it , fill it and release pressure on clamp and measure again then decide on how much it bows to risk it or not . heres a link that might help u decide .....http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-228880.html
yw i might risk it if my shop vac could hold 72gal in 1 shot but thats alot to dump at 1.5 gals a time .... besides in an apartment second floor my neighbors would smell like fish forever lol
You could remove it an opt for something a little more elegant then a 1.5" plastic border around your tank. I always thought it would be cool just to have a single bar of stainless steel say about 1/8 round through and threaded on one end running through a small drilled hole in the front and back and sealed up with an o-ring.
But who knows, maybe a small hole at the top of the glass under all the pressure would crack it. Just a thought though.
i considered a flat strap 1"x 1/8 flat strap as a ring.It will pit alot after time with salt and its kinda spendy and i could do it myself so decided to change color with some contact paper and window tint, paint was to big of a pain and i can always remove tint or paper later when i get bored with it .
so i actually only through away about 4 inches of the plastic center brace. if i got another plastic piece how would i attach it to the other end of the tank? here is a pic.
