Topic: Cheap 70W MH parts? Posted: March 25 2008 at 10:09pm |

Wasn't there a really good thread on cheap 70W halide parts? Some wal-mart lighting fixture that fight a DE bulb really well?
Does anyone know remember the thread I'm talking about?

Chris, that light in my sump is a 70W halide/converted home fixture. Any of the 300-500W halogen fixtures will take the bulb. I ordered that one through home depot because I liked it better. I think it was $7. Then, just add a ballast and you are good to go. Super simple, I can walk you through it if you like. I would just look for one you like the look of and the reflectors are super important. I may replace the reflector in this one with the 95% reflective aluminum when we build the lumenarc DIY. They should be quite inexpensive as well.
I can get the Ushio for a pretty good price through Thomson Electric if you need a source. It seems to work well. The light in my sump is a 14K Ushio.

Mike:
You have the innate and vitally important ability to always be sensible, kind, positive, kind, and knowledgeable to everyone on this board regardless of whether or not we deserve it.
That is EXACTLY the thread I was thinking of. Thank you.
Dave:
I was gonna wander around Home Depot today to look for something like what you had on your sump. It's funny, my frag tank that I had in my head was basically just that. Let me get it right, though: The fixture you had for your frag tank in your sump was a Home Depot fixture? If it takes a DE bulb, wouldn't it take all ranges of voltages if I elected to go with a 175 setup instead? Is the protective covering also in glass to block UV? Does it get hot? And last I stopped by Thomson Electric a few months back they could order from Ushio, but not in any of the color temperature ratings I wanted. They could even go T5, but again, never in anything higher than 6000K.

I did this on my tank, you can swing by anytime and see how I did it. I also ordered the cheapo bulbs from ebay and have had good results with them. I found my lights at walmart, and they were about $9 each.

I was gonna wander around Home Depot today to look for something like what you had on your sump. I ordered the one I have in, it is not a stocked item. It was relatively painless to do and only like $7. I actually bought a spare to use if I have problems with this one.
It's funny, my frag tank that I had in my head was basically just that. Let me get it right, though: The fixture you had for your frag tank in your sump was a Home Depot fixture? YES, but ordered in, our store doesn't stock them.
If it takes a DE bulb, wouldn't it take all ranges of voltages if I elected to go with a 175 setup instead? No, it will only work with the 70W halide. All of the double ended bulbs are different. The 70 and 150 use the same ends but with different spacing. Some bulb holders are adjustable to accept both. The 250W versions are larger. The 175W is only availble in SE bulbs, 150W only in DE.
Is the protective covering also in glass to block UV? Yes
Does it get hot? Not scorching but it does get warm. I have fans in my sump and canopy area. I get a lot of evaporation but that is what I wanted to be able to keep up with calcium using Kalk.
And last I stopped by Thomson Electric a few months back they could order from Ushio, but not in any of the color temperature ratings I wanted. They could even go T5, but again, never in anything higher than 6000K. I am sure you were upstairs. The upstairs and downstairs are different companies. You need to go downstairs. I have an account with them and have ordered 70W 14K, 150W 10K and 14K, and 250W 10K Ushio bulbs. (I went through a few different ideas before settling on what I have now). They can only get the Ushio Halides, not any other aquarium bulbs.
We are going to be building "lumenarc" fixtures soon. If you want in on the deal, lmk, the pricing will be only slightly more than retroing a HD fixture and the light output difference will be huge! You could even go to the SE fixture if you want, just a little bit more work. I do have 4 original lumenarc SE fixtures we can use as a pattern.

So question (let it be known that I know nothing about MH lighting). I've been thinking of running two MH's on my 125 for about 4-6 hours a day so that I could keep a clam or two and a couple of SPS's. Right now I have all softies under to 60" T5's. Would 70 watt MH be enough light for Clams and SPS if I were to put them directly under the light?
Thanks,
Tim

Tim: I think so. I don't have clams, but I think it's the PAR that's necessary to deliver the needed light for clams. It seems like the higher the wattage, the more punch (PAR) the light has.
You might even be able to to use two 175s for relatively the same setup cost. Electricity, obviously, is consuming a bit more with the 175s.
Dave:
Thanks for that info.
I'm actually down in Salt Lake/Provo for the rest of the week, so I'll be able to wander around several Home Depots and Lowes's. (Is that the correct plural of Lowes? Lowes's'? Lowes'? Huh...)

I have sps frags and a crocea clam in my frag section of my sump under the 70W halide and they are doing well. I don't get the growth and color out of the acros that I do in the main tank but they are healthy and my main tanks is scorching bright. My lps actually do better under the lower light of the sump.

Chris, If you hit the Lindon Home Depot, you've gotta stop by and check out the 125 (I'm less than a 2 min drive from HD... in fact I can see it from my balcony )
