OK... so I am considering switching from a commercially made 2- Part (like B-Ionic) to a "homemade" system (like Randy Farley's).

Couple of questions for the group-

1) Since it is summer it would appear that tracking down Dowflake, Peladow (Ca Cl2) and Mag Flake isn't easy - since these are available as 'Driveway salt' in the winter months. Anybody have a summertime source for these items in bulk? (I went to Home Depot just for the heck of it... they thought I was crazy asking for it in August Wacko)

2) Short term, would using Epsom Salts only (MgSO4) to raise Mg levels be unwise? I know about the idea of mixing w/ Mag Flake to 'balance' the sulfate ions, etc. - but in my case I only need to dose Mg like once every 3 months; I am figuring one dose of Epsom should hold me until almost November... by then I should be able to find the Mag Flake and combine the two...

I got my dowflake from http://www.twopartsolution.com/ But I've also heard you can get it year around from a pool supply store and am going to try that once I run out.

You can get it at most pool supply stores. I checked one store (about 9400 south and the freeway, forgot the name) and it is about $4 a pound unless you buy 25-50 pounds. As for mg I just bought some seachem from diyreef for $8. It should last a couple years.
