Topic: GRRRRRR.... fish being killed!!! Posted: November 06 2009 at 4:28pm |
So fomething in my tank is attacking my fish, killing them then eating half? I have narrowed it down to a select few. Cleaner shrimp (he agressively has been chasing my fish lately and has not been coming up to my hand to eat like usual? must be full?) Emerald Crab ( heard these can be aggressive and territorial in a small tank) and Tiger Pistol Shrimp ( Just heard they may attack things as well, I feel its not likely since I hardly even see the lil guy) any suggestions? I have a percula clown, black ray goby paired with the pistol shrimp, green clown goby, and had a rainford goby but he died today. others to have been killed, peppermint shrimp, percula clown, blue neon goby.

I doubt the cleaner would be the culprit. They usually chase fish to clean them. You could have a mantis shrimp lurking in your tank somewhere. The trick is after lights out get a DIM flashlight and scan the rocks for it. Are your parameters all in line? If not the fish could be dying due to other circumstances and you're only seeing the aftermath of the cleanup crew doing their job. How long has the tank been running? It seems like you have it pretty heavily stocked for such a small space...

well i had the water checked this week and it seemed to be perfect they said, it has been up for 3 weeks and i have kept 3-4 small fish in there with 10% water changes weekly, everything seemed to be healty until this week. I started feeding the fish every other day because i had been over feeding the tank which created a red slime problem, i got rid of that and things started dying, at first I thought it may be ich cause my blue neon arrived with it but lasted for 2 months with it and none of the other fish had it.
I was treating the fish with garlic in their food but it never cured the blue neon goby? Being new I have been confused about all this through time and I have also come to find most retail stores will tell you stuff just to make a buck or Two. Which is part of the reason I am over stocked on Livestock, Luckily in a month I can up grade to a larger tank. I just feel frustrated lol

Different types of garlic oil seem to work better in different tanks. I like seachem's Garlic Guard, worked wonders with my powder brown tang. I would check for a mantis shrimp, as they can hitch-hike inside live rock. Also I would just use a dim light to check out the tank at night and see if you can find the culprit. 3 weeks is a really new tank, you may just need to take things a little slower and let everything balance out.

IF it is one of the forementioned critters in your tank that is actually doing some killing I would suspect the Clownfish.

they hide alot... so at night might be your best time to try and see them. i have never had one so i am not too sure on size, but i am sure they can be pretty small if they can be hitchhikers

The Mantis Shrimp that I have seen as hitchhikers are pretty small. Maybe an inch to an inch and a quarter long and make a sound like a pistol shrimp. To me it sounds like someone tapping a nickel against the glass.
If you are lucky you might get to see him peek out of a hole in the rock:
If you are real lucky he may make a mad dash for a different hole while you have a camera in hand!
And if you are extremely luck then you won't have one at all!

Mike is funny and those are fantastic pics of a Mantis. How did you capture those?
Don't go taking the rock out yet. That's not good for the rock and there are other ways to do this before taking that last resort.
The first thing I thought of after reading that fish were half eaten was a Rock Crab but it depends on how and what part of them was eaten. As for the Goby stuck in the hole, it could have easily died of natural causes and then any of the fish could have nipped on the tail. Rock crabs are really easy to catch, Mantis Shrimp are a bit tougher. We can tell you how.
As for the Peppermint Shrimp, as they grow they must molt and the discarded exoskeleton can look like a dead shrimp.
We really need to see a pic of the tank to be able to help resolve this problem.

Thanks Mark. There was a lot of luck involved. I was photographing Scott Morrell's tank in Idaho and had the camera all set up and in my hand when this guy came out. He never stood a chance!

Thank you all so much! I upgraded to a new tank this weekend and watched for a mantis shrimp, I had a seasoned pro helping me as well. I think the problem was too small of a tank and high salinity level =( all is well now I will post some pics of the new tank soon
