Has anyone kept the Gulf Pipefish (Syngnathus scovelli)? Ive never considered keeping seahorses or pipefish, but am thinking of making a florida biotope tank and this fish seems like a good canidate. Any advice on this species or even pipefish in general?

I don't think I had S. scovelli, but I can't remember.  Try these guys, Micrognathus crinitus.  I had one a while back in my Atlantic/Florida tank.  I ended up keeping it in the sump after about 8 times of pulling him from the sump and throwing him in the tank.  I'm telling you, you will be amazed how easily they make it through the overflow and any screening.

I used to keep some with my dwarf seahorses.  The seahorses would often grab them and take a ride.  They are fun to keep, but a lot of work (similar to seahorses).

Suzy, Im chicken to try any seahorse or pipefish because of thier feeding requirements. I wanted to try the gulf pipefish because they are so cheap and live in the seagrasses im buying. I can get them for $3/each at floridapets.com (where im ordering my seagrasses). On thier website, they claim that these pipefish acclimate well to frozen foods. I thought I might buy 5-10 and just see how they do. Is there a frozen food they will accept better than others? Should I just start culturing brineshrimp? Suzy help me!!!

you will be amazed how easily they make it through the overflow and any screening.

Adam, this may be the only reason I don't attempt to keep any. All I have on my overflow is a strainer so if the fish get by it....woosh they are down. Do you think one of those breeding net enclosures would work?

I don't know.  Worth a try, worst case scenario they live in the sump.

$3 ! Can you get me one? Do you know if they are dwarfs? I
don't know anything about pipes except they are "cousins" to
seahorses! If we can get them to eat brine, I know alot of tricks
that make raising BS easy. But, I've read on RC they eat
cyclopeeze.

I might just order 10-15 and hopefully a couple will acclimate well. Ok, they are actually $3.99/each, but still a good price i think. Here is the description on thier website.

We have a couple different species of Pipefish. The more common one we find is the Syngnathus scovelli Gulf Pipefish. Other possible species include; Cosmocampus hildebrandi(Dwarf pipefish), and Syngnathus floridae(Dusky pipefish). Our pipefish are very hardy and acclimate very well to frozen foods. We find a variety of sizes! You won't find these too many other places.

Bridal veil material might work well in this instance. Since it's cheap, when it gets clogged, throw it away and cut another piece.

I finally put my (2) Alligator pipefish in my sump because they are voracious eaters.  I put them in a 20g full of bugs and within a week it was empty.  No bugs to be found!

So I moved them to my other 20g hoping they would slow down on their eating and give the other 20g time to recover.  Well after 2 weeks both tanks are just starting to recover the bug numbers.  I can't believe how much they eat.

They didn't seem interested in brine.

I will put some in a 180 gallon sea grass tank and a 24 gallon sea grass tank.  The 180 has a DSB, LR, and lots of plants and algae. The 24 has a DSB and and a HOB filter.

Just picked some up from fish 4 U today and they look pretty good. I got 6 of them and they are all pretty active and love to hang out in the seagrasses. Im not sure but this one looks pregnant. Is it?

So im planning on just feeding them baby brine shrimp. Is there something better to try? Suzy?

Are they eating BBS? Can you set up a tank to grow BBS? It
matures quickly....I think they might eat the pods pretty quickly.

Are there any left at Fish 4 You?
