Topic: Have to Vent Posted: December 04 2007 at 5:53pm |
Ok I just have to vent my story but it does have a semi-happy ending. So I feed my LPS last night. Like usual I turn off the pumps and spot feed. I click the power back on and nothing. Return pump sits there. I'm ticked but this has happened before and usually the pump just needs a cleaning. So I take it apart and the thing is busted.
Crap, it's now midnite. Do I try to get a pump? Nah it can last til tomorrow after work if I put a couple PH's in there. Wake up and my coral beauty and imperator angel (favorite fish) is dead, my PBT is hyperventilating but at least is alive. So I remember I have an air pump. I put it in there and point my PH at the surface of the water. Then I go to work praying nothing else dies.
I'm feeling like this is a pretty crappy day and is probably only going to get worse. Boy was I wrong. My wife calls me from the Aquarium. She is picking me up a new pump. Then she calls me from home. She managed to decipher my crappy plumbing skills and hooked the new pump up. She confirms only the two angels are dead and everything else looks good.
So I'm still at work but I have apparently averted what could have been a major disaster (a big part was of my own making). I have my lovely wife to thank for all this and only lost a coral beauty and imperator (I am actually still really sad about the imperator).

That's sad
It's always rough to lose fish.
Glad everything else is okay though.

That's too bad Aaron. Sorry about the fish. What a great wife you have. We had one of our return pumps shut off last night but it was just clogged. I'm sorry for your loss but I'm glad everything else turned out ok.

Thank you both. I'm glad it turned out ok too... well I haven't seen it with my own eyes yet so I'll be sure once I'm home but it appears to be ok. I did have to shell out an arm and a leg to buy a new pump locally but I couldn't wait for replacement parts to be shipped over the internet.

I am sorry to hear about your fish loss Aaron. I saw their pics taken by Mike. They were spectacular.
At least the rest of the tank is unharmed though.

Sorry to hear that... I hope you'll find a renewed happiness in your tank in the near future. I agree, I've always enjoyed the photos of your fish.

What a woman! I have tried to prep my wife for eventual catastrophes but end up getting called at work with 'such and such is happening what should I do'. To her credit she is able to take my half baked instructions and deliver!

John- same here! I'm not sure I'd want my wife putting in the new pump... Aaron must have a wife with mad plumbing skills.

What a woman is right. I didn't even have to ask. I just stormed out of the house like a 2 yr old baby (who can walk ) and she figures out what pumps I need, goes to the store, buys and installs the pump. I am a lucky man.
I'm glad that only the two angels died. All 4 tangs survived, the clown, mandarin and blenny. So I am in a much better mood today. It may be a mixed blessing too since the angels were both occasional nippers... I'm sure my corals will be the better for the fish loss.
Thanks again everyone for listening to my story

Aaron,
I feel your pain! Another thing to consider (should this happen again) is to leave the lights on. The last time he was here, Eric Borneman and a few of us were discussing the necessity of a generator and what you really need to do to keep your tank going during a power outage. He recommended running the lights to keep the oxygen saturation up - even over a powerhead or bubbler.
Something to think about ....

That makes sense now that I think about it but I would have automatically turned them off.

Yeah I didn't even think of that. I had them off cause it was normally night time and was concerned about evaporation and stagnation from low flow but the more I think about it the more it makes sense.

I can totally relate to this! I live in Oklahoma, as some of you know, and last year we had an ice storm and lost power for two weeks. It was so bad, people were stealing generators from other peoples houses because every store within an hour was closed and any other stores were sold out of generators. I had to watch my whole tank die. But believe it or not, all of my fish lasted at least 2 days, my clowns lasted 3 days, and almost all of my snails lived! I couldn't believe it! It made me wonder why my fish would last that long but yours wouldn't? I mean, I guess every fish is different and its unpredictable how long they will last. Maybe the fact that my temp dropped down around 40 degrees had something to do with it? Anyways, not trying to hi-jack your thread, I just thought I'd share about how different our tanks can be!

Perhaps I would be better at basket weaving. . . at least it would be cheaper!

I would go nuts if my tank was slowly dieing like that and I had to just sit and watch. I'm sorry to hear that.
Oddly enough it was just my angels. Maybe they require a higher o2 level than other fish... who knows?
