you can pick it up and help it back in its tube, you will lightly push helping it back into the tube.

When they are stressed or starving they can shed their crown gills. They will grow back if the conditions are right.

The main problem was the snails, crabs and starfish attacking the feather crowns / worms.  Mike the crowns did detatch and lost one of the worms and one of the crowns.Unhappy  The tube is too soft to try to put them back in.  Any other ideas?

It's a little tough to get them back in to the tube, but you can do it. I'm really pulling for you guys! They were great looking dusters!

What is the tank like that these went into? Perhaps we can suggest improvements to make it healthier so this doesn't happen again.

No not really, it mostly happens when they get stressed out. Usually when they are first added to a tank.

My Tank parameters aren't too bad, the nitrites are a little high 60ppm, but everything seems to be doing really great.  The main problem was they were attacked by all the clean up crew, my wife was mortified.  She went upstairs for about 40 mins and when she got back down they were covered with snails and crabs.  I do think one is still alive.  We have it seperated from the clean up crew with a breeder trap.  It seems to be working for now.  Thank you all for your suggestions.

Keep it quarantined until it is healthy enough to retract quickly on its own.  Once established, they can be very hardy and you shouldn't have to worry about the crabs bothering it.

However, I have seen choc chip star wipe out a healthy feather duster is short order.

Keep us posted.
