Topic: Help w/ my new Pom Pom Xenia! Posted: September 28 2006 at 12:36am |
Thanks for Mike I was the recipient of several pieces of great coral, including several mushrooms/ricordia, GSP, and two great stalks of Pom Pom Xenia. The Xenia was attached to a rock, however it appears that one of the stems, the stem that is struggling was attached to something else and I think was ripped off of Mike's main rock structure and possibly damaged the Xenia. The Xenia that is completely attached to the rock I have now in my tank is great, it's pulsing and is extended in full, however the other stalk is looking sad. It's barely pulsing and is hunched over, in a small clump. The Xenia is under PC lighting, however both are placed near the top of my tank with good (but not too much) flow. I've heard Xenia are extremely hearty, however I'm curious why this stalk wouldn't be as lively immediately as the stalk right next to it. Thanks for your time and help... Xenia can live thru anything. Half the time you cant kill it fast enough. It is a little weird that they both arn't doing good though.

Isaac,
That stalk of Pom Pom Xenia is hurt and not feeling well because I detached part of it from another rock. Make sure it is in a good flow area and it should be perked up in a couple days after it does some healing where I detached it from the other rock. If there are any problems with it let me know and I will give you another stalk. I'm glad the others are doing well.

How much of a temperature spike happened? Bad news, after getting home from work, I realized that the second stalk that was doing really good (really pulsing and wide-open) is now slunched over, pulsing some, but not fully, and it looks like there are two small light brown holes, which toxin or some brown liquid is coming out. Per Mark's advice I've thrown in a bag of carbon and put the Xenia in a high flow area. I'm hoping the two xenia recover because they looked great and were fun.

Wow, temp spike would definitely not be my problem. Unfortunately the two xenia are still hunched over and aren't looking good...we'll see if they recover.

Another thing to consider is the condition of the tank it came from compared to your tank and also it's tankmates. Chemical warfare is a big thing for Xenia. Xenia just won't grow in some tanks. And there are differences between individual Xenia colonies. If this one doesn't make it, try some cheap and prolific X. elongata.

People who tell you xenia can live through anything got it wrong, especially pompom. They are extremely susceptable to PH drops, and will most likely kill off immediately. ALot of times when they are cut at the stalk they have a hard time recooperating, etc. THe typical strains can grows like weeks under the right conditions. But not all conditions. Also xenia is a great indicator of when you need a water change, just watch how they are acting, standing tall, steady pulses, etc. If they look like they are startng to shrivel up, change the water.
