I bought 2 of these, model 3 to replace my seio's in my 65g because I like the way they mount with magnets and they swivel to any position. I'm trying them out in my 225g, adding 1700gph to my tank, and I have to say, I may just have to buy 2 more. The flow I'm getting from these 2 pumps seems to be better than my closed loop. Has anyone else tried these, or heard any comments on them? They only use 6.5 watts of power also, that's pretty good for the amount of flow being produced.

About how far is it from the glass surface to the first opening that sucks water in? Does it create a vortex and does it suck air if you get it too close to the surface? It looks like one is forming in one of the pictures.

It's about an inch and a half from the surface. It does create a vortex, but hasn't sucked the air in . But I also have alot of current in my tank also.

Too bad these didn't come out before I bought my 4 Seios and 4 SureGrip Magnetic Powerhead holders last summer. It cost me $140 + shipping just for the magnetic holders and about $240 for 2 Seio 820s and 2 Seio 1500s not including shipping. I have the 2 1500s mounted in the rear corners at the bottom to blow under and through the rocks. The two 820s are mounted near the top in the middle of the tank between the 2 overflow towers blowing down. At the time I bought them the only alternative was Tunze which are very pricey indeed.
I love the magnetic mounts, no more worries about suction cups letting go. I run bare bottom with a DSB in a refugium, so that's how I can get away with the two 1500s aimed under the rocks.

I know the model # 2 & 3 were recalled a few months back, so most LFS only have the model 1. That's why I ordered them when they came back out. Model 4 is on backorder from high demand.

I just put 3 - Koralia #3s in my 125... in a word, AWESOME!
The only problem I have is they are "rearranging" my sand bed...I have a 2" layer of 'sugar-sized' sand over a 3" layer of aragonite and a plenum... I now have 1 or 2 spots where the 'sugar' sand has been blown away and you can see the screening over the aragonite (but I'm working on that ) and that is with the Koralia's pointing upward!
I was trying to decide between the Koralias or a closed loop... since my tank is not drilled I went for the Korallias ($39.99 at FosterandSmith)...for a total of $120 I got over 2500gph of flow; less than probably 1/2 to maybe even 1/3 of the cost of what a 2500gph external pump would have cost - and they only use a total of 36w electricity... I call that a definite "win-win" situation

i have found out that these pumps are also controllable. they recommend the use of a controller that doesn't use the on/off cycle but more a cycle of full power to half power. i emailed the manufacturer and this was their response (excuse this guy's english, he is from italy): Dear Curtis,
In order to start in the right way, some time the impeller come out of the motor and come into the right way. For this reason with a normal wave maker (that gives on or off), many time the pump could start with that principle. In my opinion, that kind of wave maker could be dangerous for the fishes, they could come into the chamber impeller when the pump is in off. We are studying a new wave maker (probably ready to sell at the end of this year) for our Koralia, it doesn't come in off directly but decreasing gradually the frequency of the impeller. In this way, the impeller will be never stopped and the fishes can not come inside the chamber impeller. Anyway, We are doing also a component to apply in our Koralia, in this way, it can be used in various Wavemakers, I think that it will be available in about 3 month.
At your disposal for any further informarion Best Regards

A compelling arguement. I just cancelled my closed loop plans and ordered 3 of these for the new 90. Now I can have my extra Iwaki 40 for a backup ready for immediate use, and save money on power every month (36 watts vs 228 watts). I figure with the difference I can probably buy new koralias every couple years.
It is great to see a manufacturer look at what is happening in the DIY sections and turn that into an affordable product.

would a koralia 4 (1250 gph) be too much flow for a 55g and just blow the sand everywhere or is it tame enough for a 55g? would a koralia 3 be better for a tank this size?

I started off with a koralia 1 in my 55 gallon column tank and wanted to add a little more flow so I went to get another and got talked into the koralia 3 which I felt was way too much. I ended up taking it back and exchanging it. I would recomend the koralia #2 with a #1 or two #2's but a three may be overkill for a 55g. However it may be all right if your dimensions are standard.

I have two Koralia 4's in my 125...at times I think it may be too much, but I have them hooked up to my AquaController on a random pattern...they work awesome.

I actually ended up ordering the koralia #4 and I don't feel like it is too much flow. I am very happy with it.
