Topic: Hydriods Posted: June 16 2012 at 9:24pm |
Well, I have noticed a significant growth of hydroids in my tank. My tank is well established, so when I noticed them a while back I thought they might just go away. Unfortunately, they have not. All of my searching on how to deal with them was just to wait it out, and no real good advise.
I know that they are nutrient driven, but not sure of the best way to get rid of them. Any ideas on the best way to get rid of them?

The only thing I know of that they bother is baby Seahorses. Otherwise they probably aren't worth the bother, but Butterflyfish will eat them. Could they be Polyp or Strobila stage of the Jelly? I've seen it before.

I wish that was the case, but they are not. They are inter connected, and I have not been able to attribute them to any big issues in my tank. However they have been seen eating clownfish larva, and suspected in irritating corals. I'll see if I can get a decent shot of one. They look like a thread thin trunk with thread thin radiating tentacles from only the top of it.

Well this time around searching I found a possible solution, and pictures. The suggestion was to use a peppermint shrimp. I had one when I started this tank a few years back and then awhile back added another one because i could not findthe original one in the tank. However I have not been able find them for a few months, so I am now thinking that might be what I need. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2053654

You're right. A peppermint shrimp will probably eat them. Here is a type of hydroid on the glass, next to a Copepod and other animals.
