Topic: Iodine? Iodide? Iodate? Posted: January 21 2006 at 11:52am |
i recently tested my tank for iodine, only to find nothing for iodide.... BUT........ the iodate levels are off the charts, I`ve been dosing lugol`s solution and according to my salifert test it`s being converted from "Iodine" to"iodate"and/or"Iodide"..... (obviously iodate in my case)
So what is everybody using for iodine suplement? and how much?
Thanks Team!!!!

How old/new is your test kit? I read a thing on another forum where one
guy had all of these wierd readings from a crappy test kit. So maybe
have a LFS test your iodine before you start dosing.

You can think of iodine in a similar fashion as nitrogen.
Ammonia, NH3 Iodide, I-
Nitrate, NO3 Iodate, IO3
Lugols is a mixture of mostly I2 with a small amount of I-. I2 is a bacteriacide, kills bacteria!. But it's fairly short lived and is converted to both IO3 and I-, but mostly oxidized to IO3. Similar to ammonia vs. nitrate, I- is used more readily by more organisms then IO3, so IO3 tends to build up. That is why if I were to add iodine to my tank it would be all in the form of iodide.

Jon, have you ever added I- to your tank?
I recently acquired some free Kents Tech I and did a dose. Prior to this in the 18 months of this tanks life, I had never used Iodine in any form. Tech I is "Potassium Iodide, Iodine and Stabilizers". The bottle claims it "Provides free Iodine, Iodide and timed release Iodide." What good is it?
BTW, Sometimes people use a good dose of Lugols only to find that they soon have a bloom of Cyano. The fact that I2 is a bacteriacide may explain why.

I have dosed iodide in the past (a couple bottles of Kent Iodine, potassium iodide). Iodine is the time release part... it floats around as I2 until biology or photochemisty converts it to IO3/I-.
