Topic: lighting on refugium? Posted: November 27 2005 at 7:57pm |
I have 2- 65 watt 50/50 power compacts for my regugium that I just set up.
Is it better to leave them on all the time or do RDL.

It is better to turn them off for a little while each day. The organisms you are trying to grow (macroalgae) is like most of the other life in your tank. It needs a period of rest. For almost everything we have in our tanks, that means turning the lights off for a while. I am running my refugium and skimmer on reverse daylight. If you need to speed up your exportation of nutrients, you can run 24/7 with the lights. Just keep in mind, that at some point you should give your refugium a rest!
Good luck!

hmm i think the RPP would be good to stabilize pH but im not even sure how effective it is at that. Id like so see some actual data.
Id do it just to save on the electric bill

In my aquarium, turning the light on above the macroalgae in the sump (a 2-fist sized chunk) at night helps with the PH drop but it isn't super effective.
Light off at night: PH low about 7.85
Light on at night: PH low about 7.95
PH high in the evening: about 8.3 to 8.35
These readings are from my Pinpoint PH monitor which gets calibrated once in a while.

Running lights 24/7 is a way of increasing the export of nutrients. I use and recommend this method for newly set up reef aquariums or when a tank has experienced a sudden catastrophe like a major coral death. Algae is perhaps the best natural pollution reducer.
The reduction in the swing of pH is just one of the many things that makes an RDP (Reverse Daylight Photosynthesis) or 24/7 Refugium effective. But if this were the only benefit to a Refugium, hardly anyone would use them. There are much simpler ways to increase pH at night.
