Topic: Little help with a new Fox Face Posted: September 02 2010 at 2:00pm |
Hi all!
I just got a new Fox Face yesterday. I spent the time acclimating him correctly along with two queen anthias. Today the anthias are doing great and eating but the fox face is looking a bit suspect. He is fairly small(2-3 long) and is constantly hiding in the corner with his black camouflage and spines up. The funny thing is that he hides in the front corner of my tank where is exposed to the light and no rock. :( There are no visible white spots that would suggest he has ick.
I tried feeding him crushed nori sheets soaked in garlic today with no luck. He was not interested at all. I plan on getting some algae in frozen cube form today from fish 4 U.
Basically I would like some input on if this is normal behavior. Also what does everyone else feed their fox faces?

fox faces are really shy. my fox face was like that all week when i introduced him to the tank. put mori or some type of seaweed on a clip and let him feed on his on without watching up close. how big is the tank? does it have like cave he can hide into?
i feed my foxface ocean nutririon dried seaweed and he goes at it like my yellow tang and blue tang. dont get scared thats what my fox face always do never liked to be seen by human eyes lol.

My tank is a 120gal, and there are plenty of rocks and caves to hide in, that is why its so weird to me.

Pretty much normal behavior.
He will become more relaxed, but it may take a couple of months.
Nori (seaweed) is a must for these guys; Emerald Entree is a great frozen food choice.

yea i love my foxface, but he was shy at the beginning. He still sometimes sleeps in weird positions around my tank. He chows down on emerald entree.

So things have been going well. Foxface is out and about however I don't see him eating. He is very shy so when Im in the other room he is swimming around with the other fishes, however the moment someone goes into the room he hides.
I have tried feeding emerald entree and dried nori on a clip but nothing :( He seems to be picking at the rocks for food but not eating free floating food. All food is soaked in garlic as well. How long will he live if he does not eat? Any ideas on getting him to eat?

Do you have any sort of macro algae you could throw in there? I notice that ones I have had in the past have eaten chaeto. Probably not the best food but something is better than nothing.

Does he look like he's getting thinner? If he's a shy fish he's probably just eating when you're not around.

It is eating. Picking algae off the rocks is exactly how it ate in the wild. This is why it is so important to provide a natural growth of algae in the tank before adding an herbivorous fish. The fact that it is out and picking algae off the rocks is very encouraging. If you can find other LR with algae on it, the Foxface may last until it learns to eat the offered foods. I'm guessing there is not a Tang or other herbivore swimming in this tank that could show it how to eat, is there? It can live for weeks like this. Be patient and provide diferent kinds of Caulerpa and Chaeto (Chaeto IS a very good food ) for it to pick at. Eventually an algae will be found that it will like. As it gets hungrier and more used to the tank, hopefully it will see the other fish eating and will eventually join them. I have some golden brown sargassum/kelp you could try. Lots of Tangs and Rabbitfish like it. Give me a call to arrange to come get it.

*Update
Before adding the Caulerpa he was eating the hair algae which is great! I also added the Caulerpa and he was nibbling on that as well :) Things seem to be looking up since today I saw him eating some of the cocktail mix of emerald entree and mysis shrimp.
He also seems to be getting used to my body being in front of the tank
*Mark - No tangs yet but he seems to be learning from the other fish in my tank as I am seeing him nibble at bits that come conveniently by his mouth. I may hit you up for some sargassum/kelp but we will see. Thank you for the offer!
