Topic: Living Planet Aquarium....need your thoughts... Posted: September 10 2007 at 4:18pm |
I live in Idaho falls, my wife and I have an anniversary coming up and thought it would be fun to go to the Aquarium...Is worth the drive? I looked at the website, and it looks nice. Thought that would be fun...and, does anyone know of a good saltwater store we could stop by? I want to get some mushrooms or something...(or does anyone have any that they would sell?)
Thanks,
Josh

It was worth the drive from Layton, UT but I don't know if I'd drive much further. As far as fish stores are concerned, there are about five on the way, that I wouldn't miss. And they all have better reef tanks than the Living Planet in my opinion. Check out Aquatic Dreams, Bird World, Mountain Shadow Marine, The Aquarium (right by the living plant) if you have a chance. They are all listed under "Local Pet Stores" over there

I have never been there but my kids have and they won't drive from West Valley there again. They say it isn't worth the money. I have however, heard that some people like it so I think it is just a matter of opinion. I would definately get a few peoples opinion's before I made that drive. I do agree with Jamison, there are some really cool fish stores along the way. They in themselves may be worth the drive.

IMHO - waiting and coming down for the reef tour would be gas better spent. ;)

It is like a parade of homes for Salt Water. It is on Oct. 6th. People all over the state open up their homes that afternoon for anyone to come see their tanks. There will be a list of address' posted on this site. It is a great time to see what other people have and they way they have things set up.

The Reef Tour happens some time next month (someone proved the date please ) Essentially reefers all over the state invite you to come to their homes and check out their tanks, very cool. As for the Living Planet, it is really fun to go there. I have been there probably 5 or 6 times (my wife and I actually have annual passes) Their reef tanks aren't anything special, but they do have a cool jelly fish display, a great sting ray tank, a great shark tank, and my favorite, the octopus! I'd say it's worth going to, but I'd plan other things to do while down here, and not make that the only activity for your visit... Whenever we go there we always stop by the Aquarium because their display tank is awesome! If you make it to Orem, Aquatica and Reef Runners are both great stores.

I agree .. wait for the reef tour ... the last time I was at the living aquarium I was VERY disappointed ... I personally don't think its worth the drive from west valley either. but than again I have not been there in over a year .. so it may have changed.

Dion (Holdencraft33) has a cool stingray and he is on the reef tour. Todd from Ragg Taggs has a 650 gallon ray and shark tank. There are many more cool tanks but I would defianatley hit these 2 if you come down. The reef tour is free to the public.

Josh, The Living Planet Aquarium is not actually built yet. What we have now is a preview of what some of us really want to come! The cost is only $8 dollars, and that is really just to show that the people of Utah (and neighboring states) really would like more educational opportunities for our children. The shark tank is cool, and shows what we can do with a few sheets of plastic, some saltwater and a piece of glass in front. The new JellyFish exhibit is funky. I also like the octopus, the way the tank is lit is awesome!
There are a few new displays, including the utah native fish exhibit. That was done with the Utah Fish and Game. It has some fish you can't see anywhere else.
The touch tanks are cool!
I prefer the seahorse display myself. I heard something new is coming to that area!
When you go, remember it is just a preview and check out the display of what we could have one day! Next to the food court.

The Reef Tour is Saturday October 6th. We'll probably have a couple car loads from Boise coming down. But, you are of course welcome to come down as just the two of you.

If you're coming down from Idaho please stop by Cache Valley. We've got some good looking tanks up here. (MINE!)

Josh,
Like Dion said, if you come down earlier and want to check out some local tanks, I'm sure a lot of people would be willing to let you stop by!
