I am going to go out and collect some aragonite tomorrow. I have done a search but can't find anything other then go to aragonite exit, and some hillside? Anyone able to give me some more info on where to find it? I,m not going to get any sand, found a post of where to get that!, just some rock.

Depending on how much I find any leftovers are up for grabs (frags would be cool, but not necesary). I will post again tomorrow with my findings.

THANX

Use the search function for Aragonite, or call Mark Peterson at 296-1563.

Also, here is a quote from Mark Peterson from another thread on this board with directions.

Quote:

"Brad Adams and I are making a collecting trip within a week or so. I have a new 4x4 that I'm dieing to use. Anyone want to hop in the back seat? Call or email me at 801-296-1563 [email protected]

Do a search on this message board and you will find lots of discussion regarding this.  Note that those details of where to find it are somewhat outdated. The updated directions are as follows:

For the sand take exit 184 Grantsville and go North for about ? miles until you get close to the South end of the mountain (called Stansbury Island) the stop sign is gone but a sign "Broken Arrow Salt" will lead you. About 1/4 mile to the west on the the south side of the road is a football field sized area where earthmoving machinery "stole"  the Oolitic sand dunes! Fortunately, directly to the north of the road there is plenty of sand. Wash it in tap water 4 or 5 times until it's only slightly cloudy. For best results use 1 to 2 inches Oolitic with 1/2 to 1 inch CaribSea Special Reef Grade Aragonite on top.

The rock is found all over, even on the slopes of Stansbury Island! We initially found it, thanks to Ed Lind an ex- WMAS member, just north of the Aragonite Exit, which is about 30 minutes past the sand exit (184). It can be found lying anywhere and is usually partially buried. Here is what it should look like:

Well I wasted $20.00 in gas and a half of a day looking for rock today. I was able to find only three little pieces that look nothing as cool as Marks. With the little info I got on where to find it I started at Stansbury Island, found signs saying it was illegal to take the rocks and tons of nice landscape boulders, but nothing remotely looking like aragonite. I drove right up onto the sidehills of the island past the big pit were it looks like they are mining granite?. Next I went to Aragonite. Not knowing exactly what way north was I turned right at the exit and then went down the dirt road to past the gravel pit where it drops of into ravines. Spent an hour walking up and down these ravines only to find the three little rocks I did. Then drove down and crossed the freeway and went all the way past the refinery, but didnt see anything in the open fields.

So if any of you are planning on going looking for this stuff either take someone who has found it before or plan on spending a lot of time walking.
