Part one

Hi my name is Randy (hi randy) and I am a lazy reefer, and no I am not thinking of moving to Colorado or Washington to start a pot club.

I have a 210 gallon reef tank with a 90ish gallon sump/refuge. I have let my tank go, I don’t do water changes as often as I should and I have a number of other problems.

But the worst problem I created myself, I purchased from someone “pink tulips”, they said they were great for a reef tank, would grow fast, and add color to my tank….Sounded great…NOT, turns out they were the dreaded Majano weed! So now my tank looks like this

I have tried lime paste, Joe’s juice, and a secret tribal dance I read about on reef central. No luck as you can see.

So now I am going to try the MajanoWand. I didn’t want to spend $115.00 on something that I had no idea if it would work or not, so I borrowed one from a past president of a reef club I attend.

Not sure if you have seen one before, but the wand is a plastic stick, that has a thick needle at one end and wires coming out the other end that run to a plunger that reminds me of a bomb detonator, complete with the red button!

At first glance the wand appears to be made fairly well, it doesn’t look mass produced, but assembled one at a time. The power cord could be a bit longer (duh- we are working with water here), but the president had included an extension cord (how thoughtful).

So much like a kid with a new toy, it was time to try it out… plugged in the power, pushed the needle into the “weed” and pressed the red button and boom the Majano exploded… just kidding, the needle starts to give off all of these tiny bubbles and the Majano starts to turn milky white.

The Majano Wand does not kill by electrocution, there is never any electricity going into the water. The Majano Wand operates on the principal that when electricity is properly emitted into salt water it produces two gases. One of these gases is hydrogen, which is generated at the stainless steel tip. Hydrogen is the lightest element on earth, which converts into a gas when created, and the gas form of hydrogen is larger than the liquid size of salt water. When the probe of the Majano Wand touches the Majano tissue, it causes the water in the cells of the Majano to turn into hydrogen.

The suggested way to “destroy” the weed is to stab the needle in and out as the Majano dissolves. It takes about 5 or 6 times of stabbing it in to finish one off. So I destroyed three of them. Total time 9 minutes ish.

So it looks like 400ish “weeds”, 3 min’s each, so 133 min’s of my hands in the tank…. But you are only supposed to do it for about 40 min’s at a time, and then wait for at least an hour for the gases to disperse.

Will they come back, did it work? Stay tuned for part two.

Yeah, seems great except for the fact that it takes kinda long to get rid of just one, when there's many your taking care of. But yeah, i would like to see how this work out, and good luck!

I had almost that many in my tank then I bought a Kleins butterfly fish. Though the fish doesn't get all of them, it has dramatically diminished the majanos numbers and I have to look pretty close to find one or two.

Great read! Had me chuckling.

I would try scrubbing the rocks personally. Get a strong toothbrush ( or even a wire brush for that matter ) and just scrape the rocks clean.

Manually pull all you can out of the sand bed, then use a razor to remove any that are on the glass.

Add a kleins, then use a burn laser to fry any that grow back, or pop up between the rocks.

Just my two cents.

Ever heard of the Hindenburg? The first two sentences contradict each other. H2 is one of the most explosive gases known to man. It was used to get the Space Shuttle into space. The whole thing sounds too risky.

these actually do work really well and their are a few DIY threads on google + a few videos on youtube from people that have made their own aptasia/monjano zappers out of bbq lighters and other house hold items.

Part two-

Well I have now done three , 45min sessions with the wand here are the before and after pictures…

Before

After

As you can see it works, just as advertised.

And I can safely say, no explosions!

The downside….it just takes way too long to make a difference for me, or I guess I am just too impatient.

I think if I had just a few to eradicate I could do it, but when you have a small forest to clear it is just going to take to long for me.

So I guess I am going to set my hopes on a filefish doing the job…if I can find one!

I tried the wand and ended up with more then I started with, its a piece of crap.... Since you don't have corals,  take the rock out and dry it for a good month or so. Put it in a bucket for two days and scrub it. Recycle the tank and start again....

That's what I would do.....
I have flying monkeys and I'm not afraid to use them.

180 gallon money pit that I love.....
