Topic: Marineland Pro Stealth Heater recall. Posted: February 12 2011 at 7:13pm |
I just received this email and want to let anyone else using this heater know what is going on. I have 3 of the heaters in question, so I know there are more out there that need to be addressed.
February 11, 2011
Dear Valued PetSmart Pet Parent,
Marineland has issued a voluntary withdrawal of the Stealth PRO Submersible Heater (100, 200 and 250 watt). The product is being withdrawn due to a quality issue.
If you have this product, please stop using it immediately and take the following steps:
1. Unplug the heater from the wall to stop the flow of electricity 2. Let the heater cool for 15 minutes 3. Remove the heater from the tank
Please bring the product to your closest PetSmart for a full refund or exchange. Replace the product with a comparable heater as soon as possible to maintain the temperature of your aquarium. A PetSmart store associate can help you select the right heater for your aquatic environment.
If you have questions about this withdrawal, please call Marineland Customer Service at 800-526-0650 or 800-432-6986.
At PetSmart, we are concerned pet parents, too. We will continue to do everything we can to help you and your pet during this time.

Does this require a receipt? Are all their heaters included or just ones between certain dates?
If someone calls Marineland, please share what they say. I may call them tomorrow to find out. I'm currently running 4 of them.

Here's what I know - I'm currently an employee at Petsmart. Our store has been taking these heaters without box and without receipt. The recall is on all the PRO models of the stealth heaters which are the ones with the light in the top that goes red/green and lights up the temperature knob. If you don't have a receipt they will give you in store credit and you can just go get another heater. I'm glad they finally recalled these things and have acknowledged it as a "quality issue" because that shows the responsibility they are taking - I have been using the stealths for a long time and I was always recommending them to customers until people started complaining all the time about these new PRO units going out on them. We had 2 of these units die in our plant tank within a couple of months. If anyone has any other questions PM me and I'll check it out at work and get back to ya.

Good to know. I don't have any of the stealth heaters that have lights - so I guess I don't need to worry.

Ya I have some of the old ones too - I really like them. I was super excited when they came out with the pro versions with the lights because I'm always looking at my heater and thinking "is this on?" Too bad the pro models were a flop.

my friend was using the PRO STEALTH heater and got home last night to a fried tank. He now is deciding if he just wants to call it quits with the hobby.

I got freaked reading about these things last year and swapped mine out. Glad I kept the Stealths though...my dogs need food! Thanks OP.
Here's an official statement I found from Marineland:

The older stealths don't have a light at all. If you have a light on it I believe it is the pro. SGH360 just go to petsmart and exchange it for a fluval or aqueon heater and you shouldn't have any trouble.

The issue with these heaters goes way beyond what they can do to your fish/corals. They are faulty to the point that they turn themselves into mini pipe bombs. I have seen first hand the results of these flawed heaters and it is not pretty. People's sumps are blowing out in many instances - causing fires in some cases. It is completely irresponsible in my opinion that they are not telling people how unsafe this is and what could happen.

I contacted UPG early today about the problems with these heaters. They were less than helpful and even a bit rude. She wanted to make certain that I knew the heaters had NOT be recalled but simply pulled from stores until further notice. I just left PetSmart in AF. Ryan was extremely helpful and replaced the heater- no questions asked. While that store doesn't sell much in the way of Salt Water, they have definitely earned my business when possible.
