Topic: metal halide bulbs Help Posted: July 31 2005 at 7:14pm |
Quick question ( or I hope it is), I just purchased a used 75 gal reef tank set up and have a couple of questions on Metal halide bulbs. I pretty much understand the different wattage issues, but is there different base sizes on the bulbs depending on what type of outlet you have? I noticed while researching that they mention mogul and E-49 bases on the bulbs. My outlet and ballast is meant for a 400 watt bulb and appears to fit what I would consider a large bulb base into. There is no writing on the lamp itself. Can anyone help me figure what type of buld I need to get for my set up? Thanks , Ryan in Saratoga Springs.
P.S. ballast is for an m-59 metal halide lamp

The m-59 fires probe start mogul based bulbs. To my knowledge - there are only two bases for single ended halide bulbs. "Medium" based, for the 150 watt single ended bulbs, and "Mogul" based, for the 175, 250, and 400 watt single ended metal halide bulbs.
Probe start will fire bulbs like XM. If you want to fire the european bulbs like Ushio you'll need a pulse start ballast.

like Ushio
Except the 250 watt Ushio, it's a probe start bulb.
M59=400 watt probe start bulb

Will a pulse start ballast also fire probe start bulbs like the XM? Or is it the other way around?

New to the hobby, pardon the naivete', what is XM and where is the best place to buy halides like this. I was specifically looking at these halides, I now suppose based off of your input that European bulbs would not work that these would not work for my outlet/ballast? &nb sp; &nb sp; &nb sp; &nb sp; &nb sp; http://www.hellolights.com/400wat65iw.html Thanks for the input so far. Yup, a pulse start ballast will fire a probe start bulb, while a probe start ballast will not fire a pulse start bulb. And HQI is just a pulse start ballast on steroids.
