Topic: Mojanos and Aptasia in a Reef Tank Posted: March 15 2012 at 7:09pm |
I've heard a file fish is the best to get rid of these buggers or a butterfly fish. I'm nervous for them to start going after other corals and then not be able to get them back out of the tank.
Does anyone have one that has been passed around or does well to eat these guys that wouldn't bug anything else. I'm thinking even a fish trap to get them back out of the tank.
I've been using joes juice which seems to work on some, but not all, seems I can't ever get rid of them.
Thoughts?

Just go for it. I see them here on the board fairly frequently.

I have a file fish and a Aruga B/F in my 65g. And a Kleins B/F in my 225g I don't have manjano's or aptasia in either. But. I can't keep anything but mushrooms and Paly's in my 65g. The Kleins is a workhorse, wouldn't trade him for anything.

For me it seems the peppermint shrimp don't ever do anything, and I can't ever find them all to do lemon juice or kalk paste.
Which fish do you suppose would be best, I wouldn't mind keeping the guy as long as he doesn't go after anything else.

I've heard of people adding a copperband b/f to keep the aiptasia at bay but i would watch any b/f you put in your tank if you have corals.
I have also heard of aiptasia eating nudibranchs that only eat aiptasia, but once its all gone they will starve and die.
I have tried the lemon juice, vinegar, and Aiptasia-X, they all seem to work well at killing the one i squirt it on, but within days i will notice another nearby. Im tempted to remove my christmas tree rock/fan worms and let loose the copperband to see how it goes...

What about Zoa's/Paly's and leathers - are butterfly's bound to go after those also?

Not all Peppermint Shrimp are as good at eating Aiptasia. Also, the Peppermint Shrimp have to be hungry. If they are not eating the Aiptasia, they are finding other things to eat. Most Butterflyfish will be hungry enough to finish off the Aiptasia and then will go after any and all other coral polyps unless the hobbyists switches to feeding them well from that point onward. Unfortunately, even the best Majano eating Butterflyfish I know of, the Kleins Butterflyfish can rarely eliminate all Majano and when the Kleins dies, the Majano come right back out of their little holes where they had eluded the fish. Majano are the worst pest I know of in this hobby. The best way to catch fish that are no longer wanted is via the Nighttime Method. Look in the Reefkeeping Tips.

Mark, The Kleins don't die.
They are the hardiest, smartest, most caniving fish I own.
This one is the third one I've had. The first 2 I pulled my hair out watching them eat everything but pests. I swore to myself I would never buy another, they are SO hard to catch. But I hate manjano's even worse and when they started appearing in my 225g. My hand was forced. Luckily, this guy is an angel sent from heaven.

As i look into my tank this morning im seeing lots of baby Aiptasia forming across the sand bed. Im really looking for something to help eliminate them but i have 2 large cleaner shrimps that will kill any peppermints i put in. I think i will do some quick research on Aiptasia eating filefish, i dont know much about them but it might be better than putting in a b/f or sending peppermints to their demise.

Just happened to stumble across this as I was also looking at getting rid of some aptasia that I discovered today. Supposedly a safe efficient way to removing majano and aptasia as well.

According to the other site I found the original thread on this thing is completely safe for your entire aquarium. One comment even said there was a hermit crab on the mojano at time of electrocution and it was not harmed in the least.
