Topic: My DIY auto dose plankton reactor... W/pic Posted: October 26 2007 at 8:40am |
Just before the reef tour, I finished setting up a self dosing plankton reactor(set up on a timer). I put phytoplankton in the light reactor and rotifers in the plankton reactor the following Monday after the tour and everything is running beautifully. It includes 2 2-liter bottles(1-right side up, 1- upside down), a light source for the light reactor, 2 timers(one needs to be able to do 1 minute increments), a reservoir for sterile sea water, and a pump to get the water from the sterile reservoir to the light reactor. You'll also need an air pump and airhose for both reactors and enough airhose for the length needed to cover all airline tubing needed as well as feeding water to the light reactor from the sterile reservoir, 12" of 1/2" white pvc pipe, and some aquarium silicone. It's really very simple... water is fed from the sterile vessel to the light reactor where the phytoplankton is cultured, there is an overflowjust below the cone of the top of the 2 liter that flows into the plankton reactor. With the plankton reactor placed upside down and having the 1/2" pvc pipe lodged in the throat up to about 2 " from the bottom of the bottle(sealed with aquarium silicon) and then firmly screwed(like a cap) in a piece if wood upside down directly over the display so that it overflows back into the display when overfilled. I have my pump calibrated to pump about 1 cup of sterile sea water from the vessel every 12 hours to the light reactor which overflows to the plankton reactor , and then to the display. To aid with climbing salinity levels, once a week, I syphon about 2 gallons of tank water from the sump and boil it, them return it back to the sterile sea water vessel. So so good... the only change I've made, is rather than just rotifers, I have added GSL Brine shrimp naupli to the plankton reactor as well(and hope to maybe culture an ever replacing culture of natural foods to the aquarium. So far so good.... the green water stays very dark green, the plankton reactor goes from pretty green to almost clear every 12 hours and evrything in the tank looks ok for now, too.

I will get pics and post 'em next week. It really is pretty cool looking... my brother-in-law said it looked like a "mad scientist's" lab in my fish room.

Is there a reason that you couldn't use tank water instead of the additional reservoir, maybe from the sump just after the skimmer?

Due to the possibility of contamination from just one critter in the phytoplankton could kill the culture rather quickly. I've had to move my feedings to every 6 hours because the plankton reactor clears after just 3-4 hours now. I hope that the phyto can keep up... I fed about a 3rd of the 2 liter plankton reactor to the display to lower the population of rotifers in hopes that the phyto can get a bit darker green... I'm also supplimenting with iso algae paste.

Where do you get a timer that works in 1 minute increments?

I have 2 of them... both from Walmart, of course. Anyhow, 1 is digital and the other is programmed with a push in tab(in is on, off is out). Go to Walmart and look somewhere near the lighting and ceiling fans... that is where I found these.

Do you run a skimmer? I started a thread a few days ago asking about skimmer particle size. I was concerned that my rotifers are being skimmed out of my system shortly(5-6 hours) after dosing them. Just wondering if you think this would happen?

I guess it's possible... not only do I run a skimmer, but also ozone so I'm sure anything within the skimmer body is nuked. I may begin to have my skimmer(and ozone for that matter) go off with the refugium light(RDL). Any suggestions?

hmmm, I'll be interested in seeing what people think about this question because I've always thought that skimming and ozone didn't need to be done 24 hours a day. Maybe just for a few hours after feeding. But that was just my uneducated opinion, of course. (I don't have either, so what do I know. )

From the display side, it looks pretty clean... from the back- a mad scientist's lab!!!-

So how do you know if the culture is efficient, or if it's just headed for a crash? I guess I'm saying that it seems to me that the timing and dosage must be very important to avoid a downward spiral or an out-of-control population. Very neat- I saw something like this on Reef Central a long time ago, but I tought the guy couldn't balance the growth and required space for each organizm, etc. Let us know how it works out in the long run!

When the green water begins to become too bright or clears up, I simply feed algae paste to the plankton side until the green water darkens back up. I too hope it continues to thrive. Rodney, thank you for your kind comments... truth is, I lose alot of sleep because I think too much
