Topic: New from South Jordan Posted: June 09 2011 at 9:18am |
I am new. I have had a lot of tanks growing up, but when I moved to Utah I sold them all (I am from Portland).
My wife got me a new tank for my B-day and I am ready to dive back into the hobby.
I am trying to decide if this is the tank for me to learn to do Saltwater. I have had some pretty boring fish as well as really aggressive fish, and done pretty well, but the more I read about the SW tank, the more nervous I get. I think cost is the big issue. We bought the new tank used so it did come with a good amount of equipment, but I need to figure out what will work with SW vs what I need to buy in addition, and decide if I can afford to upgrade.
Anyway, happy to be here and learn from everyone.

Welcome! The people on this board are really helpful. I love it here. What did your set up include? If we know what you have then we can tell you what else you will need. :-)

Sorry, I didn't know if this would be the best place to get into it or not? ;) So Far I have: 85 Gallon Acrylic Tank w/Stand and Hood Fluval 304 Canister Filter Had a Heater, but the seller dropped it and broke it right in front of me :( ZOO-Med Powersweep 228 PS40 Tank Thermometer There are also a few odds and ends I haven't gone through yet, but that should be the majority of what I have.

does the tank have an overflow? I think most people would recommend that you set up a sump and then depending on what you want to keep (fish/corals) you will need to consider you lights. lots of useful info here and also some bargains on stuff if you look

protein skimmer, and if you list all the things you have we can help you figure out the rest. Try going to The Aquarium for things you can't get from someone here. It's on 700east and 9100s.

So I went through everything. I also measured the tank. Buying used I decided I would like to know for myself the exact gallons. I was told it was an 85, and though I didn't think it looked to be an 85, I was content with it, as it looked big enough for me. I measured the tank and did the math, and I have it coming out to be a 75 gallon, unless I am bad at math.
Here is what the tank ended up coming with:
2-ZOO-Med Power Sweep 228 PS40 Fluval 304 Canister Filter Tank Thermometer Lights

eheim jager heaters are awesome, fully submersible and the core of the heat is at the bottom. So if your water is low it wont blow the heater. I'd go with that one.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I am actually surprised at how quick I got my stuff cycling. I am pretty excited to go home and check it out. Also excited to set up my sump tonight as well!

Hey man it's trollin240. Your thread made me finally decide to make the plunge and will soon have a setup. Hoping this weekend or next :) The g35 has now been placed on the back burner and time for a hobby I have always wanted to start.
