are not the same thing!    Looks like we did it again - made a purchase without knowing exactly what we were buying!

So we were at a LFS looking for a juvenile Atlantic Blue Tang, and while shopping, the sales girl showed us this really cool shrimp.  She told us they call it a "sexy shrimp" and that it will eat pretty much anything the fish eat.  It was so cute I whipped out the debit card and brought it home to my 12g nano tank.

Imagine my surprise when I look it up on line and find out it is a Harlequin Shrimp - Shocked - nothing sexy about it!  And they only eat starfish!  Which I don't have! (And I'm pretty sure if I did it wouldn't be as food.)

Not sure what to do about this one.  I find the idea of dead starfish pretty sad and disgusting at the same time.  Of course a dead pretty shrimp isn't much better. . .

Suggestions anyone?

Well, I can see 3 options. 1. Return it because it was misrepresented. 2 Sell it here on the forum. or 3. Buy it some food!

I know that someone on here had or still has one and they bought a chocolate chip starfish and put it in their sump. Every once in a while they would cut off a leg and feed it to the shrimp. The leg would grow back and they would do it again to a different leg and work their way around back to the leg they started at and it would be full size again and ready to be cut off and eaten. Not sure what other starfish regrow their legs though and be sure not to put a chocolate chip starfish into your reef, unless you have a fish only system

I dont think you can do this with just one starfish. I think it takes a number of them. Maybe 5 or more. That gives them plenty of time to regenerate. I know "Acrid" has one, or used to. That may be a good resource for you.
Make sure you post your best pictures every month in our POTM forum.

So I went and bought a reef-safe starfish to feed the shrimp, but I don't think this will be a long term relationship!  I feel bad pu tting the starfish in the tank knowing it's lunch.  Guess I'll have to put the shrimp up for sale.

I should know better than to make a purchase without knowing exactly what I'm getting and what it's needs are!!!!

Good news for me.  The fish store I bought it from let me return it!  Yeah!

Of course that was after I bought it a starfish and couldn't find the heart to feed it.  So now I have a starfish. . . lol. . .

Sorry Cameron.  I already returned him.  I got him at Pet's and Such on 3500 South.  Apparently they had special ordered it in for someone, who never picked it up.

They have it back now.  I paid $30 for him so I'm sure you could go get him from there if you want to!
