a crash waiting to happen? I have alway had a ton of bubbles in the sump/ref when it comes down from the over flow into it. Well this morning I woke to no rough water, bubbles, nothing. Just clam water flowing into it and over to the return pump and protien skimmer...... Weird      I have never had this so I am wondering what happened to all the bubbles. I thought I needed them to re-oxygenate the water.... Am I heading for a crash or did I finally get it right??

Is your water level in your sump higher or lower than usual?

Have you adjusted your return lately?

Check your return pump and plumbing asap. I would say overflow waiting to happen...

Either your return is not pumping as much as usual and the sump is filling up, or else it is pumping more than usual and you arent getting any air sucked into your drain (hence no bubbles in the sump).

I thought the same thing but it is fine.... Return is running at reg rate, level in tank and sump are normal, no leaks, drips.... I really dont get it... No blocks or clogging. The water seems like it maybe it just finally siphoned all the air out??? It is strange. I have been watching it since 3 this morning.....Thats why now I am more worried about air then possible flood..

The aeration is still happening. Don't worry about that.

But are you sure nothing changed? The end of the overflow pipe may be in a different position. That could be a good thing or a bad thing.

If it were me, I would check to see if there is some kind of obstruction in the pipe. A lone snail perhaps that crawled up the pipe, or down. That's all it would take. It's not a problem now but if there is some kind of small opening being partially restricted. This creates a buildup of water that is no problem now, but with auto topoff, RO water is being added to make up for what is pooling above. The power goes out and - flood.

Here is what I would recommend you do to check it right now. Turn off the main pump and watch the level rise in the sump/Refugium. If the level rises higher than normal then what I said above is the issue. If the sump rises to the top before it overflows turn the pump back on and remove some water. Turn it off again and go searching for the restriction.

If, after turning off the main pump, the level does not rise higher than it should be, then you were right. Something changed enough, probably by growth of algae and sponge in the pipe, to stop the bad bubbles.

Hope this helps.
