Well, today I was excited to see such a cool coral that I had to buy it without any research.  I bought a Pink Colt Coral that from what I read, has been dyed to make it that color.  Has anyone ever had any experience with life/color span of a coral that has been dyed?

When I talked to Adam about dyed coral he told me they all die off. I don't know the life span but watch it closely. When that thing dies, it could take your whole tank with it.

Oh my! That would piss me off! Angry. I wonder if it will keep the color? I would imagine it would just fade.

I am only $150 mad. Cry  I will have to go in to the witness protection program when my wife finds out what I spent on a coral.  More so after she finds out it is basically fake. lol.

Where did you get it? As hobbyists we need to boycott places that do this to these animals. It is totally cruel and the the person that did this should be prosecuted. Just my opinion though

It was a LFS.  I dont want to flame them so I will keep that quiet.  They are always awesome to deal with.  I hope that they did not know that it was dyed.  Furthermore, I hope they can assist me in returning the coral even with some in-store credit.  I think they need to contact their vendor and boycott them.  Not sure if this should be on me as a "live and learn" lesson or if I should expect some sort of help from the LFS.  Any thoughts?

I don't think it is flaming at all.. I think they screwed you and that is wrong! To me they had to know what they were selling. If you don't want to put it on the board I can understand that but could you send me a pm privately so I know not to visit that store?

I am so sorry you had this happen. It is BS to me. I totally agree with Ryan!

I would be willing to bet the LFS will work with you. In their defense when ordering in corals, fish, etc. You don't get to see the stuff until it arrives. So when ordering they're placing orders for assorted colt corals. I don't agree with selling it for exorbitant amounts, or even selling it at all. But I can easily see how they could have ended up with it.

I will have to assume it was a northern store. I only know of a couple up there. I would think that either store knew exactly what they were selling. They need to know what they have done is wrong and they need to refund you all of your money, even if its only in store credit.

They then need to boycott that vendor. A LFS that won't resolve this issue shows that they don't care about the hobby but that money drives them. A LFS owner must respect the animals they sell or they shouldn't be in business.

It is obvious they took advantage of the situation. A hot pink Colt coral = MONEY and that is exactly what they did, took advantage of the customer.
SHAME on them. They should refund his money.

How much $ would you assume a LFS has into a piece like this? How much are they really marked up.

From what I know, most stores mark items up 2-300% of what they pay. They pay $50, they charge us $150. Some stores mark items up well over 10x what they pay.

And still a lot of LFS don't last. This is a tough industry where the cost of livestock includes the 25% that die and you lose on.

Please don't be mad at the store. You have only yourself to blame, since while you were at the store, you didn't simply open your phone and call me. That's what my phone # is there for. Smile

Well, I bagged it up and agreed over the phone to a 50% in-store credit.  While I wasnt happy, I was willing to accept that.  Upon arrival to the store I was informed that they would give me 100% in-store credit.  I applaud the LFS for making this right with me.  They shouldnt be out anything with this arrangement.

Wink  But I feel I go to a particular store for their knowledge and advise.  I'm not the professional, I'm the customer.  Bottom line, props to the LFS for making this right and I hope to do much more business with them in the future.

Not just Awesome,... TOTALLY AWESOME Thumbs Up
Now we would love to know the store that made it right. I'm guessing Aquatic Dreams. I am not surprised. They are wonderful.

I'm always happy to give my opinion in a quick phone call. Those types of calls probably add up to $1000's in savings for local hobbyists over the years.

That is awesome news and major kudos to the store. Make sure they chuck the coral though and don't resell it to someone else.

They should be able to get credit back from their supplier.

I agree with Tycer on this. We shouldn't have to call someone to verify what we are doing. If the LFS owner/employee isn't responsible enough to tell the truth, they need to change!

I love Ryan up at Aquatic Dreams and think his store is great. Maybe they really didn't know that the coral was dyed, but they do now. Of course I am assuming that you went to AD.

No matter which store it was they did the right thing. Kudos to them.

I ended up with a Bartlett Anthias and a clam.  I hate to name the LFS because I do not want anyone to judge the store on what I think was a mis-identification.  However I would like them recognised for their superior customer service.  If, the owner of the LFS reads this I would love him to speak so I can thank him publicly.

Or maybe it truly is a new species of pink colt coral that we will all be begging to have in the future.  Again, I am no professional.  Just a curious hobbiest.  This is one situation that I hope we are ALL WRONG about.  Thank you all for your help and answers.  You all are top-notch, just like our reputable LFS's.
