Topic: Planted Tank o the Month? Posted: April 05 2006 at 9:22am |
Ok, guys. I need your help! I have never seen a planted SW tank be ToM anywhere and I think it is long overdue! Have you ever seen one on RC or Reefs.org or Plantedtank.net? It is time!
But, it can't be my tank 'cause it is sooooo not ToM!
Yet!!! Can you guys help me make it strong? Granted, this pic bites but you can see the jist of it? I need a pointer or two?
I'm thinking I want a path of aragonite up the middle trailing behind a focal point to add a bit o' depth? Is that too over done? Does it actually decrease the boxed in feel the tank has?
And, how would this hint o' purple be for a foreground plant on the right? If I use a tiny textured plant on one side and a large textured plant on the other, does it throw off the balance?

Way to go Suzy! I love how you think. Who would have thought that a tank void of expensive coral could be so beautiful. Good for you! For balance, depth and focal points, I'd ask Diana Tabor (Where the heck is she?). I think I speak for most guys when I say, I have no idea how to help you there.

Suzy, I have a book on aquascaping.... can't say that it was a tremendous help but it may give you some ideas. If you'd like to borrow it, I'll bring it to the meeting.

messed up and now have to retype everything again arrrgh.!@
anyway, not that it needs improvement,
##/rambling mode on/
it looks great BTW, and looks beter in person, but how about a rock wall on the back(really thin) but so that it looks like if you went around a corner there would be more to see...........
maybe have the blue lighter at the top and darker at the bottom?
have you seen that nano tank they just set up at Marine Aquatics? they did the entire back wall of the tank with rock frags, looks really cool. they did shelves and arches, somthing like that maybe.
this is a longshot but what about some sort of painting/photo of deeper ocean with some rock at the back wall that would really give the tank the illusion of some depth. (I may try that for my tank), I'm not thinking the fake looking stuff at the petstore but maybe a real photo of a reef, if you could get the depth and distance correct, the aspect ratio I guess is what you would call it.
##/rambling mode off/
(I hereby reserve the right to use these ideas on my tank in the future, JK)

Here is my nano, more to follow. Suzy you are the goddess of the algea's. Look at what you started a whole new world of reef thinking.

Connie, yes! Please! thanks!
Ramblin man, thanks!
A rock wall all the way across the back? You can't see the rocks in this
pic, but every green is , rock is behind it. Are you thinking extending it
up, down or all around?
Hmm, the background idea is interesting.....hmmmm....
Ok, so on the far laft, the spray makes no flow at all. So, would a rock of
blue 'shrooms there (it would be a focal point and draw the viewers eye
toward it) be just what I don't want? I am trying to draw the viewer in with
the path....
I will stop at MA after work.....Friday?

I'm sure Shawn is lurking somewhere ....

Suzy -
I read this article tonight and immediately thought of you and your tanks. Thought you might find it interesting.
