Topic: plate coral?? Posted: December 19 2007 at 6:16pm |
Whats the trick to keeping a plate coral alive? I have had two and they dont last long they start getting white on them after about 5 days. I got good calcium, do reg. water changes and have a high power howl light. oh and pretty good current i have tried putting them every where in my tank just can't keep them alive....
Thanks!

What about the rest of the specs?
Alk
Mag
Phosphate
Salinity
Temp
Tank size
Filtration
Flow
How long has the tank been up?
and what kind of light is "high power howl light"?
The more we know the more help we can give

Feeding is good, but if they only last a few days before going downhill it's not a "starvation" scenario, IMO...
Agree with Crims... whats a "howl" light?

Are you talking about a plating monti (SPS) or a fungia plate (LPS)?

depending on the kind of tank... if you have several corals.... you will need to dose the alk to keep it stable.
IMO 70 watt HPL (whatever) isn't enough or the right kind of light for them. It sounds like a Normal Output light which is just a normal florescent light like for freshwater tanks. If you can tell us the brand of the light or give a pic of it that would help.

Ok if its the LPS then you definitely need to feed it. Also I have questions about the light as others do.

I have a green plate coral in my 14g nano with a 70w metal halide and it does awesome. It's already grown visibly in the 2-3 weeks that I've had it. I spot feed it every evening with a mix of cyclops, cyclopeeze, spirulina/brine/mini mysis, coral food, zooplankton, and arctipods. I just take a cupful of tank water out every night and make the soup and then turn off the pumps and skimmer, then I let the food just float down on top of the plate and it sticks to it. Then i let the plate eat for about 20-30 mins and then turn the pumps and stuff back on. Also I keep mine in the sandbed and then let it stay in a medium flow area
Hope that helps!

I keep plates (lps) in everything from pc to halide. IF its Monti then it defiantly needs Halide. 70watts isn't even close, to being enough light on a 48g tank. For much of anything really.
Also LPS = sand. SPS = rock (due to his saying they turn white - I'm betting on Monti)

If you could post a picture that would really help. If it is monti, I agree that it is the lights if its lps I bet its the rock. Fungia plates need to be in the sand or they die, usually very quickly. Even when they are in the sand if they arent happy where they are they will move to try to get to better conditions.

Montipora digitata, capricornis, and danae all grow well for me under power compacts.

Are you talking about fungia or heliofungia, like these? I have seen specimens at the LFS that are on the verge of death. If you can see the skeleton underneath the viable tissue, it is on it's last leg and will be difficult to bring back to health. That being said, you could be a strawberry basket over it to prevent the fish from stealing it's food, and put some cyclopeeze on it for a few days. It might recover. Once it has good tissue back, you can feed it mysis. It will eat much quicker when it is strong. I feed these mysis, cyclopeeze, whatever happens to be in my turkey baster. I keep them on the rock down low, under an overhang so light is not the issue for these spp. IME anyway.

i will take a pic, but i don't know what to say but thanks for the post, but they have not helped at all. so hope they help someone else i belive my light is ok for what i put in the tank and all three bulbs are new with in the last month. This coral really looks like a plate rock. so i don't know how feeding helps i thought it was just light and good water. but i will try it but no luck so far, thanks again.

Please post a picture. It would also help to know where you live. (city) If someone is close they can come and help. I would enjoy trying to figure it out with you. It would be much easier if I could see your set up and offer advice.
Wheel of time. I made it through 9 and couldnt go any farther. Hopefully after some time I can get back in and finish it.
