Alrighty ppl . . . the holiday season has been long over. . and you know what, it's time for us *wudan & I* to set up our 90gal tank! wo0T!! I'm just too dang excited!! (if you don't know. . we've had this tank for months and funds were holding us back from setting it up)
What's the first step??
Well I should probably clean the tank out, seeing how it was "Some Dude's Sump" - yeh the dude had like a 210 in his living room or something to that nature.
Here's a picture of the dirty tank - yucky!!

My rule of thumb is buy things used for cheap unless you can find a better deal. . . (Go ahead and call me a penny pincher. . . I won't deny it).
So I'm going to be using vinegar for the tank. . . to get all the salt creep off. And a good scraper for all the silicon.
Please if you have any advise on the way - feel free to let me know. As I'm still a newbie!

Hey when I cleaned my tank up I used a regular knife to get the bulk of the silicone off then I used a razor blade! It made for quicker work! I also used a gallon jug filled with water to help rinse the stuff off so I could see what I still had left to do!
YEAH--keep us posted!
Sukie---I have to rub it in(you got me started on this kind of stuff and I set up a bigger tank then yours before you did--now you are tring to outdo me--he he he---Healthy Competition)---***By the way--my kids are beginning their final drafts of their "Name the Fish" essay for you to judge***

Use a new sharp razorblade. Wet is probably better than dry. I thought I was being careful on mine but I still scratched the glass. I have never removed the silicone from a tank and resealed it but I have heard that new silicone will not stick to old.

Be oh-so-careful with the razorblade. Like Mike said, use new ones and have a dozen or so on hand. The longer you use one, the more likely it is to run into something it can't quite cut and lose it's straight edge. Then you start to scratch. I'd use a new one after every 3-4 cuts.
Just me, though.
Good luck setting up the new tank. :)

Only a dozen razor blades? Go buy a box of 100 at Harbor Freight!
Looks like Greenanemone and I both have you to blame for getting us into this!

That was someone's sump - and it's already drilled..nice. If you can lay it on it's side and put about 1/2 a cup of heated vinegar on each of those patches of salt creep for about 10 minutes, it will come right off with a sponge and you won't have to scrape it. I do it all the time with used tanks. Vinegar is great for salt creep, coraline algae, dirty powerheads, etc.

Amie that's great information. I have a powerhead intake that's gunkified in all sorts of nastiness. I didn't want to scrape because of the thin plastic and all. I think I'll try dipping it in vinegar.
Amy, you'd probably do that anyway. :)

Well with a lot of elbow grease, we got "Some Dude's Sump" cleaned out:

We got overflow guards from Mark a couple months back and cleaned those out too. Our next goal is to get the tank drilled for overflow and closed loop.

And guess who built the tank. . .

I've been working on a 3d model of the tank stand:
Since we'll be getting a 55 gallon tank to work as our sump, this prompted some very interesting design considerations. In each corner are 3 2x4s, and 2 2x4s run the 'length' of the stand. The stand itself is 2 ft 'deep', which means theres a 6 inch shelf behind the tank for putting the closed loop pump on.
The surface for the actual shelf is kinda high, I think on the only other stand I build it was just 31 inches, not sure on this one but it's higher.
I'd really appreciate any suggestiions, since I'm pretty sure I'll want to have some center posts as well. The sump will be 'slid in' through a door on the side of the stand.

That's actually from Blender, a 3D modelling software that's fairly easy to use, once you get around the very interesting interface. My other hobby is 3d math + video game development (er ... and video game playing!), which has proven useful in a lot of areas.

If you really want to be cutting edge, take a look at Adams ideas on linear flow. It will change the way you have it drilled.........
|
Posted By: Wudan
Date Posted: February 12 2007 at 5:52pm
I'm a' Googlin' - got a link?
We plan to use a variable timing mechanism to alternate the flow, since
just about everywhere I read says that linear flow is bad (how would
you like to live your whole life in strong wind?), so what are
Adam's thoughts on the subject?

Well we took our 90-gal to get it drilled for the closed-loop and the overflow on Friday night to Marine Aquatics.

The intake for the closed loop (center hole) is 1 1/2" and the returns are 1". I can't remember what the measurements for the overflow are.
If you noticed - we have the overflow box changed - reasons were the corner overflows would be a PITA to plumb since we can't drill the hole in the bottom of the tank (tempered). Plus cleaning the overflows and getting them ready to silicon to the tank would be annoying too. So we opted to have Andrew (Marine Aquatics's employee) make us the overflow box.
Now are you wondering what's up w/ the way we drilled it?

Well it's something called barebottom. . . . . .
Oh I'm totally kidding!!!! On the closed loop - I'm have the two lower bulkheads (in the corners) connected to pvc and run them under the sand for each corner. The other bulkheads for the closed loop will be 8-12" above the sand. I'm thinking of getting a Dart Snapper for the closed loop - that will give me 20x (total estimate) turnover for the water. As for the return - a mag.
You think I'm nuts yet??

K the pressure is on to actually begin work on the stand - I shaved down the clearance above the sump (was greedy with the space since I wanted it to be easy to work down there) - what's a good rule of thumb for how big the space above the sump should be? Obviously it'll need lit, but that shouldn't be a big deal since it'll just have chaeto and assorted junk down there anyway, we can use PCs or some such. Do I have to have the sump raised up, or am I ok to just leave it on the floor (probably on a sheet of plywood, currently plan calls for a 2x4 raised platform, plus a sheet of plywood, raised about 2" off the floor.

Call me crazy, but I think you're splitting hairs.
As long as things can do two things: 1.) hold weight tank(s) 2.) give you room then you'll be fine
But hey, all I did was retrofit a DI dresser... what do I know? :-)
------------- Ils sont fous, ces Romains!
|
Posted By: Will Spencer
Date Posted: February 21 2007 at 3:56pm
You'll certainly want room to work in there. I really wish I had more room. I's say give yourself 12" of clearance above if you have the choice.
As far as the sump being on the floor it shouldn't be a big deal unless you're worried about water leaking under into carpet or something.
|
Posted By: Mike Savage
Date Posted: February 21 2007 at 4:34pm
It's a tough call. You want working room for sure but don't want the tank so high that you can't look down at the sand bed and clams. Corals also look better from the top.

Well we built the frame. . .

We talked to Dion and he made us the best pitch on finishing it. The day before the BBQ he was so kind to even delivery it for us and when I saw it I got super giddy!!!

Woozers!!

We started plumbing Sunday after the BBQ - here's a shot of the back

If this week wasn't crzy - I think we'd have it plumbed now. . . I think the next day we have free is Saturday.
Do you guys see how it's all going to look with the plumbing???

We have the closed loop plumbed -

Here's the close-up on the Dart and OM 4-way.

We still have to put the ball valves and unions on of course - any suggestions??

Make sure you have access to the back of the tank. It could be VERY VERY BAD if it leaks and is buried behind the sump.

Mr. Murphy is very much a part of this hobby, with particularly disasterous results. Here's my beef- throw in some unions and ball valves, reassemble & glue, and test it where you can see it (just freshwater). If you have microbubbles from leaky connections, etc., fix it and THEN set it up. IMHO if you have a leak in your closed loop, you've got yourself a problem if you can't shut it off. So, test it, install it, test it possibly again and then don't touch it. A pump behind the sump would be nasty to replace the seal on, so if you can elevate it so that you can get to it, great. Oh, and it's not if the seal will wear out or leak, but when...
|
Posted By: Wudan
Date Posted: October 05 2007 at 7:45pm
I think Dion has cursed this project. I know in my gut that if I set it up now, after he has pointed out this potential problem that it will in fact leak within 6 months time unless I move it to a position with easier access.
|

That tank is going to be awsome. I do agree with the fact that you are going to have to access the pump and oceans motions.
Make sure you can get to all the unions and ball valves.
Another idea would be to cut a hole in the wall behind the tank and have full access to get to everything.
Also I have some really cool frags for you. I have a really nice fungia plate as well.

Water test of the closed loop was completed today.
Special thanks to Jake P for taking time from his incredibly busy schedule to come and advise on how to procede, Amie H for helping with the gluing fitting, and moral support, and Freshy with helping to move the tank so we could place the rubber mat peices around the edge of the base of the tank, and with the wet test itself.
We've essentially re-done the plumbing twice and the third time was it. What a relief to find that the Dart and OM 4-way both work flawlessly.
I've begun painting the back of the tank 'sailboat blue'.
It shouldn't be too much longer.

We'll post pictures of the closed loop soon - once the back is painted.
Oh! We even got a video of the Closed Loop in action. If things work out - we might have it filled by next weekend.

I have to hand it to you Brad and Amy. The patience the two of you have shown in getting this tank up is amazing. When I set up a tank it has to be NOW. You have taken the time to figure out exactly what you want, plan it, implement it, change your mind, start over, try something different, fix the latest problem, etc.
Your are going to have an awesome tank when you are finished.
Patience and integrity, that's the ticket!

So. . . remember what our closed loop USE TO LOOK like???

Well we finished painting it - we just did one coat - we figured that in about a year the whole back would be coated in coralline anyway.
Do you ever just want to get Bob Ross on something when you're painting???

Well I told Wudan that I'm going to add a "happy tree" and he wanted to add a "Fun Cloud"

Here's the tank painted:

And here's what our closed loop looks like now:

I want Jake's autograph on the loopie-d-loop! Totally his idea.
What do you guys think? A whole lot better right???

looks cool. You wont be putting any sand in the tank? if you are, arent the two outlets too close to the bottom for sand?

Well the plan is to run pvc under the sand and 90degrees/45degree angles in front corners of that tank.
Here's the video of the OMs & 4way in action. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SFlk-t__uE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SFlk-t__uE
What's next??
- Well we have to run a new electrical line for the tank. The dual 175w MHs are 10.7amps and the VHOs are 4.4amps = 15.10amps with just the lights. bleh
I want the MHs on the new circuit + the return pump.
- We also have to plumb the sump. . .
- Mount the lights to the canopy. . . .
I think it could. . be up by this weekend. But no promises.

hopefully that was a typo, but dual 175's should not be at 10+ amps, a 400 watt lamp is at 3-5 amps(depending on balast), also I have my entire tank running on one 15 amp circuit, that is with two 250 watt MH bulbs and the closed loop pump.
