Okay this is a follow up to Heil's post.
Lets say that we do put on the Fish Radio Show. We'd need a few people to really help out with it.
1) Someone to take the incoming phone calls and screen them, and queque them up.
2) 3 People to help run the show, and be there in the studio, but would not have to be on the air (unless you want to), but to organize things during the show
3) 2 web gurus. People to stream the video and the like.
This would be done on Saturday evenings. So here is the question.... who here is actually willing to help out and make this happen. Trust me, you don't have to have any skills or special talents, we just need a couple solid volunteers.

Where are you planning on running the show from? I do have some broadcasting experience, and was a sound engineer for 3+ years (I still do it as a hobby, but not professionally anymore). Let me know, I'd be interested, but I would need to know all the details and what not.

Well Adam, it might take some work convincing the misses, but I've always wanted to work in Radio (I actually almost took an internship with one of the local radio stations recently, but then when I started looking at what life would be like with the pay cut and decided against it...) Let me know what you guys figure out!

It would seem under completion of this show that we should shoot for a.m. 570. Because they have an extensive public broadcasting array. I myself can help if there is any need for assistance. Perhapse co D.J. for I have a very large practice in invertabrates. Also we should advertise for the living planet aquarium, support for the beginning aquarist, and guest local pet store owners. The idea of a night program doesnt fit my mind as the ideal aquarium show day time should be brought to an idea.

Radio shmadio!!!! Too expensive. Why not just podcast this (just upload an mp3 file and create a link)? Much cheaper and you can still take live calls. No need to screen the calls, just edit the audio file if you need to before posting it.

the idea of saurday night from 5 to 7 is because its a national time slot
and it wont cost the club anything
2 hours national would be around 2500 per hour if you were paying for it
also its streaming audio, and satalite
and it would nation wide if advertised around the country we could take calls from all over the country
then if the show was good enough it could get sindacated
the club could pull in major $$$$
think of all the good it could do maybe support a reef rebuilding
trip who knows

Here's the honest situation ...
There is simply not enough interest in the club presidency to make this happen. If you all want to get together and have a fish talk show, then by all means --- DO IT. I will certainly tune in and help with special events. But the club cannot commit to a long term deal.
I know it sounds like an exciting opportunity. But remember, it is not one Saturday, or two, or even a months worth. It is every week! You will need to find guests, write shows, seek advertisers, create publicity events. All for free. How about a full time job, without getting paid.
The club can barely get enough people to commit to stay home for one Saturday a year to show their tanks to the public! And even with the biggest name is the hobby coming to SLC last month, we only had 72 people show up to listen to him speak. I'm just not convinced the listenership is there - even among Paid Members of the club.
The idea of a radio talk show is appealing, but the reality is, the club cannot support this venture - at least not at this time.

and two hours to do a show
the people can rotate and not have to be there every week
i would still like to do the show all we need from the club is maybe help with guests that they would like to here for them selfs
i thought it would be a great way to promote the very things this club was
formed to do

Raggtags and cephyowner.....Call me if this is something you are really interested in......If the club wont support this now, lets get it gowing and then they can pay for some advertising later, once it is up and running.....If we could find the free place to nationaly broadcast to get started{like was said earlier}lets give it a try......get a few weeks under our belts....we don't have to have in studio guests to start....we could do phone calls to some famous people just to get it off the ground......
I also have a website that I pay for every month....but only use about 1% of the memory alotted.......If you want to set something up using the site the name I have paid for is www.eaglecreekcabinets.net
We could do eaglecreekcabinets.net/fish {or aquarium, saltwater, saltwatertalk....}another option would be to just buy another name....through yahoo it is only about $12 a month.....{then we could always put a link to my site}

woooooooah pull in the raines we are still waiting for the club and members to agree that a radio show would be a good idea
lets wait and see what happens and get this done right
we would like a first class show then look into advertisers, extra guests
we still have to aproach the pres, with a game plan
its good to hear what people want but this will be the first reef show on the radio and we want to look good and show people what we really stand for.
if this comes up in the meeting then we hope the pres, will take a good look at the idea and let us know what we need to do....

I have a suggestion, maybe before someone goes out and schedules a radio spot we should write a couple of shows (like 4, a months worth) and pre-record them and see how they go. We could start simple with guests that are relatively easy to get a hold of, for example Presidency Members or possibly one of the guests that comes to speak at a meeting. Honestly if we could get 10-15 members to show up as an audience they could make the calls in and ask unscripted questions.
I suggest this primarily because I think it would not only be nice to have a few good trial runs, so we don't look like morons on the air, but also so that when you go to radio stations you have 4 pre-recorded shows you can start with. These can also be used for the initial podcasts...
If anyone is interested in something along these lines let me know since I do have a lot of recording equipment, and could probably engineer the pre-recorded shows.
Anyway there you go, thats my 2 cents...

superman1981- that isn't a bad idea at all. Imagine having a guest speaker here (like Jon on Thursday). We could spend an hour interviewing them the day after the meeting and just record it.
However, I'm still worried about the finances of this project...

Well Adam,
I'll tell you what. If we can get it worked out to create a couple of pre-recorded shows I'd be more than happy to help, and I won't even charge my hourly rate Of course that does mean, we're going to have to schedule a few weeks in advance, and have everything set up. I'm more than happy to donate my time to help the club out, since it has helped me out a ton!

Would it be a good idea to PODCAST or "Pre-record" one of the meetings or portions of the meetings and put them out there as a show or download? Just a suggestion. This could help with content - especially with the DVD's and stuff available.

These are all great ideas! How many of you take advantage of the Reef Podcasts that are currently available here: http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/past.php - http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/past.php
We have discussed the idea of podcasting meetings, but the interest in purchasing DVD copies has been so small, we determined it not to be worth the investment.
Rhine - how many DVDs has the club sold so far this year? This info may give you a better idea if a podcast would be utilized.

Maybe the best way to find out if this is worth while to do is to record a couple of different hour long shows, post them as podcasts and see what happens. Worst case scenario, we all donate a couple of hours of time and decide we don't really want to continue. Maybe we'll find out we like doing it but that instead of weekly we want to record one podcast a month and upload it... or maybe we'll find out we love doing it and at that point can start approaching public radio stations and solidifying deals with them.
The fact of the matter is we're never going to succeed if we don't prove to all the skeptics that this can not only be done, but that it can be done well. I'm willing to pack up my recording equipment and spend a Saturday creating a couple of podcasts, I'll even mix them so they sound professional because I believe that this could be something that would be great for all of us. But before we jump onto the radio, lets set up a plan, make the podcasts and see where we go from there.

Todd,
Thanks for removing my name from the PM you received from Cephyowner. I appreciate your discretion. Many people in the presidency and otherwise received the same message from him. His reaction was due to a private message conversation he and I had today regarding his role in your idea to organize an aquarium related radio talk show. It appears that he may have been speaking out of turn in regards to the project.
I'm confident he misrepresented his fish keeping experience and it appears he has misrepresented his conversations with you.
At least now you know ...

I also have receive quite a few pm's.....as well as alot of phone calls......
Cephyowner, chill a little bit......things take time.....we like the energy, but like I said in a pm....a hostel take over is not a solution.....remember you have only had a username for less than a week.....get to know some people, and read some threads for a while before you go running your mouth.....
This is not ment to make you mad, I just hope you take a step back and cool off a little......you could be a great asset to the club, but don't make your first impression a bad one.....
I don't want all of this to disrupt the radio show, there are still a few of us willing to put in the time and effort to make it happen....and it wont be done with a vendetta tward the club.......I agree with SUPERMAN 1981 it needs to be well planned out before we ever set foot inside a station on the air......

I'd be more than happy to donate my time, I was a master control operator at WB30 TV for a while so I have some knowledge that might be helpful. Also I did a small radio show at the UofU for a short period.
Just let me know if you need some help ;)
