Is anyone interested in doing a mesh wheel mod on their skimmer?  I can get the mesh material, but you have to but a lot, like enough to mod every skimmer in the club and have enough for the idaho guys too...

You have to buy a piece 39" x 72" and it takes about 2" x 6" for each skimmer.  I would only charge a buck for enough to mod 2 skimmers (or mess one set up).  I will also post up directions on what to do, there are also many sites around with directions.

Thanks,

Are you planning on using the Gutter Guard stuff? If so I have some you can have. I bought it for another aquarium project and I HAVE MORE THAN I WILL EVER NEED!

I'm in the middle of doing a mesh mod to the needle wheel on my skimmer along with some other mods. I got the enkamat on ebay 8 inches by 8 inches for $5 shipped. Not sure how much the sheet is  but I suppose if you get enough people to chip in it could be cheaper. If you don't get enough people you could go the ebay route. I would also get  kill-a-watt as some of these mesh mods can burn out a pump pretty quickly if they are not done right. I have found RC to be a great source of info on these mods.

Fax, just PM me, I am home most evenings -- I am doing the last intraceptor treatment this saturday -- so you can come before that or wait until after when I give you some frags.

As for giving the gutter guard away -- I have used about 10 inches out of about 10 yards. Sure you can have some but it only costs $5 at harbor freight. Unless your live close to me (Pleasant Grove) it probably isn't worth the trip.

That is the same podcast that I posted above under the picture of the mesh up there ^.  I will order it today, my only concern is that I don't get out of the office much these days (luckily my tank is here) to deliver, but I can likely send some up to a meeting.

What time are you heading up?  I will only be in the office until about 11:45 tomorrow because it is my son's B-Day.  I can probably leave it just on the white counter cut up into a bunch of pieces, ready to go.  There will be someone in the office until 1.

I haven't arranged the tank just yet so don't judge my aquascaping abilities too harshly.

Fax,

I would like to get some of the mesh when we are in the area for the reef tour(If you have any left).  I don't know if we will have time to make it as far south as your place before the tour is over  I think we will have to skip some places to make it to Mike's as it is.   I will talk to the guys and see what we can do.  Once I get the released version of the tour map I will have a better idea...

Thanks,

No problem, Brian.  I'm in no rush.  What skimmer are you running on your tank, dkle?

I don't know if anyone has done the mod yet, I think it will do best for those that have done the recirc mod first, but I plan to do it first.

I checked the mail box today and saw the mesh Fax sent me showed up.  It took about 35 minutes to modify it.  Works awesome so far.  One plus is that the pump runs much smoother.  About 1/4 of the pins had broken off over the years so it was a bit out of balance.  When you mod it, everything balances out...

Thanks,

Scott

Thanks for the update.  A few questions though:
1. Did you do recirc, meshwheel, and increased air intake tube or just meshwheel?
2. How much of an improvement in performance would you say it is?
3. What kind of skimmer do you have?

Anybody in SLC with the modified simmers?  I would love to come and check it out.

I have a Euroreef ES5-3.  I modified the pin wheel impeller of the Sedra pump it comes with.

I am thinking about doing the recirc mod.  I saw it on Reptoreef's skimmer during the tour.  The major stopper is figuring out how to use the sedra pump for the recirc.

The bubbles are much finer and I have been adjusting a lot since I finished it.

Thanks,

Scott

Here is a link for you Scott.  I too have a Euroreef and have done these mods.  I do not take my input water from my display return however due to the flow is way to high and it overruns the skimmer.

When are you doing the mesh mod?  I'm interested in the mesh mod; only because recirc is pretty much not an option (can't get the skimmer out of the sump due to size).

I will let you know.  I am going to do it because of an experience which
turned into an experiment.  I recently changed out my refugium for a larger one and transferred chaeto from my frag system also which I was taking down.  There was a lot of loose chaeto which ended up in the intake and wheel of my sedra skimmer pump.  I noticed quite an increase in the skimmer foaming and was puzzed so I took the pump apart and noticed that the wheel was encased in chaeto.  I cleaned out an reran it and the foam output decreased.  I let it get plugged again and it increased so I will be doing the mod because the chaeto simulated the mesh mod very well so now I am a believer......

Thanks for the link.  I don't think it will be a option with this sump because it would make the foot print to big to fit. I might pull it tomorrow and do some checking.

The mod was definitely worth it though.  I ended up pulling the skimmer out and giving it a vinegar bath so I could be more visual on the adjustments...

Thanks again,

Good to hear Scott.  Can't wait to get mine done.  I did not do the gate valve mod, I just did a T on top of the normal output, then a street L on the side of that and a straight pipe down to the water level.  It makes it so I can make pretty precise adjustments, and still not get my hands wet.

I do have a gate valve available if someone wants to buy it, brand new, won't fit in my sump.  I'll have to see what I paid for it from Aquatic Ecosystems.

If anyone has any Mesh left over I'd like to take some off of your hands.  Let me know if there is any left and I'll get with you to figure out a price and shipping info.  I've got a G3 that I did the recirc. mod and the gate valve mod to and now I'm itching to do the mesh mod.

I followed the directions from this site... http://www.asmskimmer.com/mod2.htm
I didn't pay attention when I was doing the direct feed so I made it for a 1 inch input instead of 3/4inch or whatever.  It still works though.  I got the uni-seals from aquatic-ecosystem.

fax still has plenty, (well it's still in my truck)but you need to work it out with fax and I can bring it to the meeting, or drop the rest off to fax. I am south in Spanish fork, but I will be in bountiful for most of the day tomorrow. if that helps at all.

Actually I'm in Florida so I was just looking for someone with extra mesh to give me a price to send me enough to do one mod.  I stumbled across this forum while googling mesh mods.  Someone let me know if its possible.

ah, come on you don't want to drive to Utah to check out our skiing? LOLI ship packages for work all of the time, so shipping is not a big deal for me, I'd say pm fax(fj40fax) and work out the details(we do not live that far from each other)

Well honestly I'd probably rather head up that way this weekend than go to the inlaws for the week.  I'll shoot him a pm and see what we can work out.

Thanks

My dive partner lives in Gainesville, and he'll be here at my house this weekend.  I can have him take some back... but honestly you might as well just have Fax put some in an envelope and mail it to you.

I just sent him a PM.  Gainesville is a good 5-6 hour drive from me.  I live in the panhandle all the way over in Pensacola, almost in Alabama.

If it doesn't work out with fj40fax, you can buy a 8inch by 8inch sheet on Ebay for $5 shipped. That is enough to mod about 4 skimmers.

I read earlier in the thread about pump burn out and something called a Kill-a Watt?

Could someone please explain this in more detail?

The Kill-a-watt will let you see the before and after of how much power the pump is using, you don't want to have the pump draw more power than it was using before the mod, if it does you stand a good chance of creating more heat in the pump and burning it out.

Does that help?

Sure it does. Where can I find more info on this? I assume it is something that you purchase, right? I bet I could just use my meter to measure the current. That should give an indication of increased power consumption.

Yes, if you can do a amp draw test(current), that would tell you, I am not sure if you would need to convert that number to watts to see the difference or not though, The kill a watt is a cheap  box that will measure the amp draw and do the watt conversion and give a readout on the screen.

I could.  It is easiest to use priority mail, just take a chunk to the post office and throw it in their envelope for whatever that flat rate is now.  To Salt Lake it may be cheaper just to do first class and buy an envelope.
