Are you having any problems with Nitrates?  With an ug filter and a wet/dry I suspect you are, but if not there is no reason to change it IMO.

Using an undergravel filter (UGF) is how I started my first saltwater aquarium in 1993. Then, in 1995 an article came out which talked of Plenums. I switched over immediately and have been experimenting with better methods of filtration ever since.

Though it is not the best method of filtration, in my opinion, a UGF can be left in the tank as a plenum. But the plenum area needs to be protected. What I mean by this is, to be sure that it is always kept covered with substrate. The uplift tubes should be removed and substrate allowed to fall down the hole.

If at some future time a pesky fish digs a hole down to the top of the UGF, the plenum is ruined and a load of organic nitrogen gets released which causes an algae bloom.

For more info, search this board for "plenum".

What are the "right lights" and what measure of temp fluctuation do they create?

What all do you have in the tank now?

What is the substrate and how deep is it?
