How many of you, like me, frequently have to miss club meetings for work, school, family commitments or other reasons? Would you watch these meetings and activities if you had access to them? I would like to find out if I'm the only one who regrets not being able to attend regularly. Let me know your thoughts about Podcasts or other ways of viewing meetings and activities and if you think it is of any value.

OK I guess there is not much opinion regarding podcasts or recordings of the meetings one way or the other. I'm not sure if this is a lack of interest in what happens at the meetings or just the podcast format but from the overwhelming lack of response this is probably not a good use of club resources.

Unfortunately every time we address this issue that is the exact conclusion we come to.

Just a bit more information.

In 2007 we made a significant effort to record the meetings, edit them (add titles, date, etc), and burn the meeting to DVD.  We offered them for sale for like $10 so people who missed could pick up a DVD and get the information.

We sold about a dozen over a six month period and the effort was eventually abandoned.

Can we just record them and put them online to watch with no editing done to them?  Seems easy and very inexpensive.  Just an idea i am not the best computer guy so I don't know if you can even do that.

If I could get my hands on newer recorder (have an old one, but i don't wanna go through the effort to get THAT one working with my computer...) and get to the meetings every month, i would happily record, edit, and post them on Youtube :) or even edit them, then just hand out the file to sight members via Email or some other classified way so that the public wouldn't see them. :)

BUT I don't know if I could make it to every one, or even get my hands on a newer camera /recorder.

But i would be for someone doing this :) i would certainly subscribe :D

What about a digital recorder... just do audio. ????

Those recordings are easy to post or email to members.  They are easy to record too! My recorder cost $69 at sams club last year and is excellent for things of this nature.

If I lived closer I could record too ;)

I guess I spoke too soon. It appears that there really is an interest in recordings of the meetings. I agree that posting the recording online would be easier and better than burning CD's. It's next to impossible for me to get to Thursday meetings and I left my wife in CA this afternoon and flew in for the Saturday Seminar because I didn't want to miss it. Actually leaving her in CA makes it easier for me to attend Wink.

I can't make all the meeting now do to my promotion at Rcwilley.  I would love to have a podcast of all the meetings.

Anyone else have an opinion? It looks like the main thing holding us back from having recorded meetings is a lack of interest. Adam has said they discuss it in their presidency meetings but conclude that there is really not much interest in recording the meetings, but every time I read a post on the last meeting there are several people who feel like they missed out because of other commitments.

If you have ever wished you could have attended a meeting but couldn't please vote in the poll and better yet post a reply here. It may not cost an additional 5 bucks but even if it did thats only 42 cents a month to have access to some great information.

I would be willing to help out on this endeavor. I think a podcast is a MUST and could be done with very little effort. All we would need is a camcorder - I wouldn't use a webcam as the quality just isn't there. But a camcorder and tripod and you could easily with about 30 mins of effort convert the file for a podcast.

I work afternoons so I can't make it to meetings. I would like the online/email option. I really like what the club is doing this year and I really want to be a member. But I haven't been able to make it to a meeting so I'm still not a member this year.

Thanks- it's good to know that.
We've worked hard to listen all the input from everyone so that we could put together a good schedule of events, demos, lectures, and most importantly fun with fish friends.

I was a Paid Member for 2 yrs before I ever had the chance to go to a meeting... you can become a member online; you don't have to attend a meeting in order to formally join the Club.

Then, at least you could possibly attend a few 'Saturday seminars' and the Annual Members BBQ...

In another post on this subject,   http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=34292 - http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=34292  this idea was voted down by the presidency and the thread was closed to further comment.

While I understand that it is the presidencies responsibility to decide on these matters I'm not sure why no further discussion is allowed on the thread.

Here is the quote by Adam regarding the issue of Pod Casts.

"While it may require little investment it was still seen as providing very little return.  It's unfortunate that some club members are unable to attend the meetings, seminars, and activities, but the presidency felt they needed to focus their efforts on those events and didn't want to add on this proposal. "

My question is what is ment by, "providing very little return"? Are we talking financial return, or benefit to the members?

In response to the poll above the current response was 3 to 1 for the use of podcasts. My guess is that those who responded are only a small portion of those who would benefit. There have been several threads on this subject in the past couple months and several members have expressed a desire for some way to catch up on what they missed at the meetings, be it a simple audio recording or unedited vidio file, as well as a willingness to help both with equipment and time.

I want to thank the Presidency for considering the Idea. I know they put in many hours making the club one of the best around, and that with Reef Fest and other activites coming up now may not be the best time for adding something new. I was just surprised that after posting that the Idea was turned down the thread was closed to further comment.

I agree with Burt especially since members volunteered to do this - which would require no real need to involve the presidency.

Sorry Burt I should have answered here as well.

This idea was voted down.  While it may require little investment it was still seen as providing very little return.  It's unfortunate that some club members are unable to attend the meetings, seminars, and activities, but the presidency felt they needed to focus their efforts on those events and didn't want to add on this proposal.

Thanks for the recommendation.

The reason we closed that thread is because we heard all the input and made a decision.  No use beating a dead horse.  It was seen as providing little return as in little benefit to the members.  Much like when we recorded the meetings and sold the dvd's a few years ago.

We do realize that not everyone can make it to the meetings, and that is unfortunate.  Some people have to work nights, others have scouting or sports, and some of our club members simply live too far away.  We can't cater to the needs of all, nor accomodate all requests.  We are a regularly meeting club, not an online service and we decided to keep our efforts in that area.

Hope that helps,
Adam

It should be mentioned that if any of you want to show up and videotape the meetings you are more than welcome to.  (this excludes some guest speakers that we can't record)
I'm just saying the presidency isn't going to head up the efforts.  So as jwoo just said the club members can get together and do it themselves.

Go for it!!!

OK,

If members would like to try recording the meetings what would they have to do to get the recording posted on the site? Is there a particular file format or procedure we would have to follow to make it easy or would we also be responsible for finding a place to post the video online and post a link to here?

Burt,

Easiest way would be to upload them to youtube - start a thread with the videos embedded and include the link to download them. That would seriously take me all of 10 min to do and wouldn't require the presidency or access to the site.

Cool,

Is there anything you would need from me or other members to get this going? I work out of state so I can't be at the Thrusday Meetings but occasionally am able to go to Saturday Seminars. If we really want to do this thing we should get a pool of those who would be willing to help and coordinate the efforts so someone is available with whatever equipment is needed at the meetings and the files get posted promptly.

Yeah I lack a video camera. I can manage the uploads, edits, software needed etc. I just lack the hardware.

I'm starting a new thread looking for volunteers. The more people we can involve the easier it will be on everyone. Once we get some people behind it we should get together for a bar-b-q and make some plans and assignments.
