Space hadnt been a problem before.  I always could have all the coral have all its own space, not worrying about anything interacting.  Things are starting to get more crowded and pretty soon corals are  going to go from having its own house to living in a townhome.

So my question is this.  What corals do you need to make sure arent close, or touching?  Also what corals are fine to be close or touch?  I see some amazing tank where everything is touching dang near everything else and they all seem fine.  But I'm guessing thats not always the case.

Whats everyones advice and experience?

lps can fight sometimes (and kill)! I have alot of sps right together, no problem at all. Some of my sps is very close to each other.

Most corals like to be spaced atleast a little bit. One reason can be them stinging each other, another reason is faster growing corals can shade/overgrow other corals.

A good rule of thumb is to keep LPS 4-6" apart. They have sweeper tentacles which they use to sting and kill their neighbors. SPS generally do fine close together. As do most softies.

I'm probably the most recent example, the only problem I've had were my green acans and my green fuzzy mushroom expanded and killed my whole colony of acans

Dont put a bubble coral next to anything they have a really long tentacle that comes out and zaps other corals. Mines like 4 or 5 inches long. Already had him kill a frag:(

This is at night, when most of the sweeper tentacle activity occurs. This Pearl Bubble Coral was a damaged one that I bought for cheap and was recovering in my tank. It is expanded out about an inch from the skeleton and gets very fuzzy while feeding at night. If there was a coral close enough and upstream from it, it would send out sweepers to protect itself.

Note the LR below it. That is southern Utah Red Sandstone.  Smile

Here is the same coral about 6 months later in a pic taken just before lights out.

Learned a lesson on this. Last night my brain coral got sat next to one of my ricordias as I hadnt had the chance to make it a permanent home, needless to say today the whole center of the ricordia looks like it got stung all night:(
Do I need to remove the ricordia? I am assuming it will die as it looks aweful!

They can recover. A new place in the tank would be the best thing to do. Wait it out and see. If by tomorrow it's gone, I mean melted away, one ricordia will not mess up a properly set up reef aquarium.
