Question for all (but assuming Jake is going to drive this conversation)-
Do you think adding iodine is helpful to green star polyps?

Is Adam considering using an additive?

Yes, but I don't think we should add it because it is in the food!

I have no actual knowledge on the subject, I just want to take a
chance and see if I can be right once!

The way I look at it, I got a 50:50 chance...yes or no...which is it,
Jake?

Yes.  Although I think many people would disagree with me (including Eric Borneman).

I'm not sure if soft corals intake iodine as a supplement, but I definitely think it's antiseptic qualities help the over all health of the tank, just don't over dose it.

Oh, I also think it helps your fish.

I think iodine, along with strontium, boron, iron, manganese, vitamins, amino acids and other trace element additives, are really a try and see sort of thing.  I don't see any compelling evidence to suggest that levels of iodine greater then those found in natural seawater is beneficial.  So the difficult part for the aquarist is to determine just how much available iodine you have in your tank.  And subsequently just how much should be added (or not).

So Adam, I say just start adding a little iodine to your tank and see what happens.

I dump in Iodine once in a while.  I think it helps fish as Jake said.  But I've heard many times how it helps green star polyps.  In fact if I were to advise someone on how to grow gsp I would say raise your alkalinity and add iodine.

But Jake hit the nail on the head.  I brought this up after reading something Borneman said and his belief that iodine is bad for green star polyps.

Like many things, I used to add iodine regularly, but when the last bottle ran out - I never replaced it and I havn't seen a noticeable difference in my aquarium.
