| I have quite a few snails that seem to hang out above the water line in my tank. Is this normal behavior? I'd say it's astrea and margarita snails. |

Mine do that as well. They seem to still be healthy. ------------- 40 gal w/ 20 sump |

I think it's normal. My astrea snails hang out at the top of the tank but my margarita snails actually climb over the side sometimes and drop off on the floor. My Astrea do that all the time. No deaths for me.

It's normal to a point but can be caused by other things. Is there enough algae for them to eat? Are there too many snails? Is the tank too young for that many snails? Are the Alk and Ca within range? Some Nerite and Margarita snails are from tidal pools and spend half of their life out of water so it's not so unusual for them to climb out for a breath of air. This is odd behavior for Astrea snails. I haven't had any Astrea snails abandon ship but they do like to hang out just under the rim of the tank. When the return pumps shut off for feeding and the water level drops it leaves the astrea snails above the water line but they start heading back down fairly quickly. ------------- Burt An equal opportunity reefer, I support all hobbyists and organizations involved in Marine Aquarium Keeping. Mark - I'm not growing algea in my tank - at least not anything other than the "film" you get on the glass. I have TONS of coraline. I don't know if I could grow macro in the display (sumpless) due to 3 Tangs I have in there.
I got new bulbs for my MH lights - maybe that'll help? Do I need a 6700k PC bulb in there to help algea grow?
My Ca and Alk are good. I can get numbers on them tonight.
