I am in the process of putting the finishing touches on my clownfish abode. The mating pair of goldstripes are comfortable in their new dwelling and are cleaning their nesting area!!! I would like to get them an anenome for a tank warming gift but am concerned about the lighting.

This is a 30 gallon standard and I have 2 55w pcs (12K and 7K). My xenia survived in this tank but wouldn't pulse and my leather coral was growing but very slowly, so I transfered them to another tank. Since this is only a 30g and a clown tank (only fish to be in the tank) and there will be an anenome, I don't want to spend too much on lighting.

I'm looking at bulb tip anenomes so would like to know what lighting those that have this type are using.

I've got a 37 tall (the same size as yours just taller) with 2 x 55 watt pc. My corals do great. My anemone does well, but doesn't bubble quite as well as it should. I think everything grows so well in my tank because I do a 5 gallon water change every 3 or 4 weeks.

I was wondering if adding more pc's would help? Earlier on I believed this, but now am not so sure. Do you have white/blue (7k/12k) pcs?

One is white/blue the other is white. To be honest I don't even know how old the bulbs are. I bought the setup from Mark Peterson last June for $20. They had some age then. You're welcome to come by sometime.

Is each double light considered one bulb? If so I only have one 55w blue/white pc! That would make a huge difference in what I decide to do.

I have my BTa's in a ten gallon tank with 1 55w pc light. They do well but IMO they could use more. If I were you I would add a little more lighting if you could

Bruce,

When you say a little more lighting are you suggesting a second set of 55w, (or even lower (36w), or are you suggesting up to mh?

A 175w MH would be just the ticket for that tank and that anemone.

Look around, you can find them pretty cheap anymore. Especially if you're not particular about an eletronic ballast.

Right, I have decided to go with a 175w with 14Kbulb. I am STEWPID when it comes to lighting. When you say not particular about ballast what do you mean? And where else should I look?

The electronic ballasts are a bit more pricey. They will run cooler and reportedly more efficiently. However, you should be able to find a moderately priced tar ballast from someone on this board (faviasteve), e-bay, or one of our LFS.

Thanks, being a 30 gallon and it's position (upstairs on the north wall of a south facing room) it gets quite hot. We are thing of awnings which should help but the less heat I generate upstairs the better, though if they are considerably cheaper I just may have to try it out. I posted in b/s/t for mh setup so we will see.

Hello everyone,

FWIW, I've seen used MH ballast, socket and reflector combos on ebay for fifty bucks.
