6-7 months ago i posted a topic about a browned out acro. well here we are now and the color is trying to come back but now have another issue. The tissue is reseeding from the Base. Where the tissue is still there the polpys still come out. Running 250 10 k halides and as you can see it is high in the tank with strong water flow. The only time you can see the green in this coral is when the halides shut off and my VHO actnics are on and then it is a really bright green. Is this Normal? Calcium and Mag. is within range but i do have a little Phosphates. Nothing to lose sleep over. Any Suggestions or will it continue receeding until its gone? I do feed oyster feast but had to back off my feeding. Feed a little heavy sometimes. Looks like a form of tissue narcosis. Maybe STN? I would suggest fragging the largest piece, well above the damaged area and moving it to another location, preferably lower on the tank. All other Acro are doing Great. A full tank pic would be helpful. I see cyano on the coral itself. That tells me two possibilities; overloaded biofiltration and inappropriate flow. Try moving the coral to a different location and completely stop feeding the tank for 5 days. FYI, SPS coral does not need to be fed anything. It absorbs dissolved nutrients and uses light energy to grow and thrive. Before fragging I would consider dipping the entire coral and watch it closely for 3-4 days. The Cyano actually started on the base of this coral. I can post pictures but will have to be multiple. It looks awesome. Look at all that growth! My comment would be that if you consider the stream of water flow, the closest coral upstream of that SPS are a large Sarcophyton and Anthellia/Woods Polyps. I would definitely move the coral to a place a little further downstream of those two. I believe you use AC, correct? Is it running all the time and do you replace it every 2-3 weeks. The reason I ask this is because I see a tank that is packed with coral, some of which do not get along too well. Running good AC and good coral placement are key to helping "everybody" play together. If you would like to see a similar tank situation, call and visit Ross Bagshaw in Bountiful. He isn't on the MB but it's his wife that makes the treats for the WMAS meetings. | Hard for me to tell but is that frogspawn just to the left of the Acro that is receding ? Frogspawn can put out pretty long Sweeper tentacles that might be able to reach that acro. HTH |

That's the crazy thing with acros, seven of them will do great and one will perish. And for no particular reason. If is is STN and not RTN (slow vs. rapid) waiting might be okay. I agree with all above, each coral is an individual colony with it's likes and dislikes. Fragging a branch or two could save it.

I have a red planet colony that if my alk gets too low it will do that but all my other sps are fine. Whats your alk at? ------------- The time we enjoy wasting isn't wasted time!!!! |

The coral shows the typical signs of alk swings and Acropora Eating Flatworms (AEFW)....to eliminate the second, take a turkey baster and blow at the coral with short, quick bursts- if you see small flat worm or two flying off, then thats your problem. If not, then I would think it is due to instable alk. If you get your alk level dialed down, I see no reason to frag it, as long as the tissue necrosis has been gradual. If it is rapid tissue necrosis, frag off sooner than later.
EDIT: Tricolor acros are notorious for being AEFW favorite coral....

My .02 cents. SPS love lots of flow, but they like random flow not direct. It looks like from the first pic you posted and that FTS that you have a powerhead pointed almost directly at it. If that is the case try aiming the powerhead a different direction, or move it a bit. I've personally had this happen to the edge of a plating monti before. Also, you said you only see a bit of green with the actinics on. 10K bulbs are great for growth, but even with supplemental lighting don't bring out the colors of your acros. ------------- "A fish tank is not a pet.
