What color combination of bulbs do you use?  I've been reading that some colors can cause more algae growth because certain colors are within the spectrum that some algaes prefer?  Is this just a rationalization for having an algae problem due to excess nutrients or is there actually fact behind this claim?  I really want my corals to pop and just purchase a 4 - T5 HO fixture.

Me personally I like mine to look more blue so I buy the blue + from ATI but it seems like a lot of tanks I've seen use one white and the rest blue and purple and actinits.

I purchased a used TEK 4 bulb T5 HO Fixture.  I may run an LED strip on each side of this fixture -- looking for what I want in LEDs.

I'm not sure about bulb spectrum promoting algae growth but old or weak bulbs definitely can.  Be aware that some of the cheaper T5 bulbs and fixtures do not produce the PAR as some of the better fixtures  ( ATI , Tek etc. )

I have an ATI fixture with 8 bulbs . Currently running ATI bulbs, 5 Blue Plus,2 Purple Plus, 1 Aquablue special.

For a 4 bulb fixture 3 Blue Plus and a Purple Plus is a popular combo. The nice thing about T5's is that you can get a couple of extra bulbs and try some different combinations until you find a combo you like . HTH
